One option could have been to set a router for Steve to use in the 'international' 12-14 channel range. But asking people to shut down is a lot easier.
If the new iPhone used the 5ghz range, there may not have been a problem. But it doesn't.

yeah, is there a reason why they wouldn't use the chips which do 5ghz as well? I know it works a bit more poorly, but since all their current routers have this option wouldn't they want to have it fully compatible?
