Nope - ISO 1600 is excellent, and ISO 3200 is certainly useable. Even ISO 6400 in a pinch.
I have a native prime lens that is an f1.7, and a couple of adapted lenses that are f1.4s. If I really needed faster (and I don't) Voigtlander makes a couple of f0.95 lenses for Micro 4/3, and Panasonic just announced a 42mm f1.2.

The iPhone camera has been getting better after picking up the new one last week. The iPhone 5s is definitely rich in features - burst mode, slightly larger sensor, faster lens, 120fps movie, better low light performance. Just tried it out on a recent trip, not bad at all. Won't be replacing the 5D Mark III though

If I'm going somewhere with a elevated interest in photography I'll carry:
Nikon D50 (soon to be D7000 or D7100)
Sigma EX 10-20/3.5
Sigma EX 24-60/2.8
Vivitar 100/3.5 Macro
Sigma EF-500 DG Super
Any other time I carry a Canon S90 for snapshots and "just in case" something of interest comes along. Occaisonally I'll rely solely on my Samsung Galaxy S4 if I need to travel super-light, but the Canon S90 doesn't take up too much space in a computer bag.

My Canon s100 - for me this was a good hybrid camera before moving to a DSLR model.
I take a lot of video with my EVO 3G LTE

Compared to the S90-S120 series, much worse available light performance (slightly smaller and lower end sensor, and smaller aperture) and a few other down sides for enthusiasts -- no RAW, clunkier manual controls -- but for a lot of people the zoom range (and slightly wider wide end) will make a bigger difference.
My father in law had an SX260 as his main camera and loved it.

If you tell us your budget, your level of experience taking pictures, and how massive is too massive, we can say more.

In addition to my DSLR, I carry the Sony DSC-RX100 - pocket size but shoots raw format and has outstanding results. An updated model has come out making the older one a bit cheaper.

+1 on the Sony RX100 - I never go anywhere without it. Small enough to slip in jean pockets and the photo quality cannot be beat given it's a full size sensor.
