I've moved from a Nikon D7000 to 7100 and also carry a Sony DSC-RX100. On planespotting trips, I carry my Sigma 150-500 other wise its a nikon 16-85 and sometimes the 18-200. A go-pro is usually mounted to the flash shoe.

+1. The RX100 is the most amazing camera I have ever used (considering size, price, etc.). Focus is dead-on consistent for me, raw picture quality is amazing (even at medium ISOs) and it fits in my pocket.

I am also the owner of a Nikon D700, D3S, D200, D300 and about a dozen expensive lenses. The only time I take out my DSLR these days is if the purpose of the trip is photography.

Thanks.

The original reason I bought it was because I was unable to see the screen clearly on my previous point and shoot and my NEX system. I was returning from trips and finding too much stuff with focus and blur issues. I simply wanted a 99% chance of a near perfect picture under 99% circumstances. I am unable to believe the quality of what the camera achieves. When I look at them back at base I cannot see how I could have improved them even with my NEX.

What makes it even more confusing is that the HD video is better than my Sony HD camcorder. And the key thing is that it is permanently in my pocket.

Canon S90 - it shoots RAW and has good low light capability. I also bring a mini table top tripod for long landscape exposures.

Unless I'm on a planespotting trip, I leave my Canon dSLR at home. It's too much, the camera with lenses and AKS pretty much take up an entire backpack. Not really worth it for me since the S90 takes great pics and the IQ difference for my snapshot purposes isn't worth the hassle.

Also I'd look like a toolbag taking pics of onboard meals with a dSLR.

I am in love with my D800E. Upgraded from a D300 (and to that from a D40) and am I glad I did.

The low light capability is amazing - I can get street shots in low light that I would never dream about before. If I was always shooting in optimal light, I would want a smaller SLR for travel, but I could never go back now.

I use it with the Tokina 16-28 f/2.8, Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 and Nikon 50mm f/1.4 95% of the time.

Does anyone travel with a Fujifilm Finepix X100 like me?

I've taken it to 5 countries in the last 3 months. It's capable of producing almost DSLR-level photos but the fixed lens force you to get very close to the subjects and that's not always possible or desirable?

I use to take a Fuji X-Pro1 with a 35mm and a 50mm Noctilux with me, was great, but sold it and got a Sony RX1 - never looked back since.

BTW, can anyone recommend a light tripod that fits within a standard backpack? I'm looking at the MeFoto Roadtrip, remarks?

35mm full frame equivalent is quite nice for most scenes, landscapes, cityscapes, people, etc. You can always crop. I shoot 50mm full frame which is not much tighter than 35mm, it's my favourite lens.

i have the original x100 with 12mp which is less friendly to cropping than the newer x100s revision with 16mp.

while its still the most enjoyable camera to shoot with, it unfortunately isnt the best. the sony rx100 is the lightweight travel cam and the sony rx1 is the photo-targeted travel cam. the x100 is just a nice looking desk weight

I agree. Thankfully v1.20 & 1.30 of the X100 software fixed quite a few of the "quirks" in the X100.

I got a X100 last year and I love it. It travels with me everywhere since I got it. I like to take lots of portraits and family candids. The results are great, especially in low light situations and at high ISO (pictures at ISO 3200 & 6400 are relatively clean). I have an iPhone 5 as backup.

My wife has a Panasonic TZ65 (multi-zoom compact) which takes care of situations when a zoom is needed. My 5 year old has a cheap and cheerful Fuji compact. On most trips, all three cameras come with us.

I carry my Canon S95 and now I have my Galaxy S4 as a backup. I thought about taking my DSLR on Europe backpacking trip in July, but I don't think I'll do it.

The smartphone is too slow- by the time I swipe the thing to get it to display, then choose the right app, the subject of image has changed if it's a moving object! My digital camera broke and the spare is a piece of junk. I inherited a 35mm nice Konica and I want to try it out next trip. No "apps" to select, no "swipes"- just point, and shoot.

GoPro (for snow sports)

Pentax KR with 1-200 walkabout lens.
The camera body is quite small & well suited for o/s travel.
