Hmm Apparently the Japanese market is very strong.

I wonder why is the turn-around time at SJD is 3h45min? The aircraft should be able to return to BKK with 2 hours - why wait until 11:15AM?

Perhaps so on return to BKK it can spend a minimum time at a gate prior to a subsequent departure somewhere?

Since it is a winter schedule, I wonder if Sendai is a good starting point for skiers coming in? My initial thought is no, but I would actually need to look at maps to be certain that there are not some ski districts easily reached from Sendai.

Yes there are ski resorts within an hour so and for non skiers Zao Onsen (itself a ski resort) which is also nearby is very popular with Thais and other nationalities for the snow monsters. Yamagata Prefecture is more accessible from Sendai airport than from other airports, unless possibly taking a connecting flight to Yamagata, but then the airport has few flights and is more than 30 mins from city.

Actually, Sendai is not the only route THAI will open in Winter 2019. There had news in Thailand 1 or 2 months ago that TG will open the routes to Sendai and Manchester later this year. The planned aircraft for Bangkok-Manchester route is A350.

Interesting! As I understand it this new route may not be marketed towards Japanese tourists traveling to TH but Thai/Asians going on winter holiday in Japan? To be honest, I had no idea that skiing in Japan is so popular in TH/Asia that enables TG to open a new route.

On a different note: Isn't Sendai the area with radioactive contamination from the nuclear meltdown/disaster many years ago and sealed off from the public?

Sendai was served already five years ago by Thai Airways and it is the logical next biggest catchment area for Japanese tourists who want to visit Thailand during cold winter season after all other airports which Thai is already serving. In addition to that the local ski resorts (Nagano?) also may attract Thai visitors. The traffic between Japan and Thailand is meanhwhile quite well balanced as so many Thai people are visiting Japan.
(and: Sendai is not Fukushima and as such hasn't been immediately affected by the nuclear outbreak).
