Agreed. In addition, if a thread is locked then posts in it become very difficult to quote in other, later, threads.

OTOH, I can see a benefit to the community of eliminating the ability to make 100 useless posts per day. If there weren't people building up massive post counts in Omni and elsewhere, with useless posts, I wouldn't mind if Omni posts counted.

This really is a moderation issue, and one that I hope the Omni mods will take into consideration. Then this entire thread wouldn't be needed.

I'm not building up post counts in Omni - I'm conversing with some longtime friends, much as I see in other forums. I check into FT numerous times a day and check about 20 forums. I don't post to each and every one because I don't have anything to add. In the areas where I have expertise, I'm frequently the first to respond. Does that make me less of an FTer? I'm probably using it more than someone who flies a gazillion miles a month.

This place, after 14 years has become a community of like minded people who enjoy speaking with each other. To allow a bunch of status-happy counters to have such an effect on it is simply unfair to the rest of us who have been coming here day-in and day-out for years. What is says is that our contributions have zero value - when, in-fact, Omni is the single most popular area of FT.

There are two ways to handle it. More moderation, or a simple throttle control to limit the number of posts per day. I average around 4 posts per day, but I would be happy if there was a 20 post per day limit. Or even start with a higher number to see how it works. Maybe 40 posts in a 24 hour period? I think that would be plenty. Who makes 40 useful posts per day on this board?

That's your prerogative. I've decided, though, I will probably unsubscribe from threads a week or so after motions are completed. No sense beating a dead horse.

Throttling is a double edged sword, however.

I have seen some great information posted in various forums where the information is streaming in at a record pace due to a change in some points program. In one instance on the Hilton board, there was an outstanding thread of people posting bits of info. Some of that info would have not made it to the thread in a timely manner had the throttling been in place mostly because it was the same 2-4 people who were doing the research and legwork and posting the info as fast as they got it.

I don't want to limit great discussions and information sharing like that because someone is concerned someone in OMNI might be padding.

OK, but did they make 40 posts in the same forum in a 24 hour period? If so, did they make 50? There should be some number less than 100 that we can limit to.

And if we want to bring in a moderator, they could apply the throttle only to users who are making large numbers of useless posts. That would leave normal contributors without a throttle.

Actually, while I don't disagree that there could be some sort of a limit, it's just overkill IMHO. As is the games forum idea, and whether or not they count.

The entire issue was started because of a few people gaming the system and Randy being fed up with them.

I don't want to give the mods more work and truly believe that all contributions to FT should count. Right now, post counts are such that they are no real indication of anything, except perhaps no life ;) My daily total is 4.66, as of today ;) I also can't say that in any given day I would post anywhere near the numbers you suggest.

The easiest solution to try to get things back into some perspective would be to go and delete, yes, delete, the threads that were obviously post padding in Omni, then go after the contests that are in community and delete them. You will get rid of the vast majority of inflated posts. It will not take away the counts from those who "live" in lounge threads and have accumulated tens of thousands of posts there, but to delete those threads would get a lot of people who enjoy them quite upset. Plus, I don't feel they are part of the problem. Going forward the mods could delete any thread that starts looking like someone is trying to just get more posts added to his total.

Again, it would have been easiest to just go back and put everything the way it was and actually punish those, by deleting the threads, who abused the system. And not allow it to happen going forward.

I really, really, really don't like the idea of a throttle control. Moderation is the better way.
