Koko, you may have pointed the way to a solution.
Your suggestion has some merit. Unfortunately, being pretty severely limited by the vBulletin software Gods, it is technically unfeasible. |

And -- here's the point -- each of the two sides -- substantive and non-substantive -- would have its own separate post count! That way, when you found someone on the substantive side with a high post count there, it would give some indication that the person had posted frequently on subjects that were related to flying/travel miles/points, etc.
But with that in mind, it got me thinking a little "out of the box" for a moment. What if there were two separate bulletin boards created. One called Flyertalk.com and one called OMNItalk.com. I would think that two separate counts could easily be maintained then. I would think that "links" from one to the other could easily be created to make the separation fairly transparent to users in each (i.e. OMNI could still be in our forums list just like today, but it is really a link to OMNItalk.) Of course that would mean everyone would need two ids (one for each board.) Either have everyone create a new ID for OMNItalk or possibly see if it is possible to "copy" IDs from Flyertalk to OMNItalk. So there would be hurdles to overcome and I have no idea what if any cost impact that might have for IB, but maybe it wouldn't be much if any. Well, I'm probably smoking something way too strong here for general consumption, but thought it might be worth at least mentioning since a number of folks have mentioned that having two different post counts would be a good alternative. |
That wouldn't address the issue of off-topic posts in the core-FT counting.
You have to remember that Omni WAS for all off-topic posts. |

Unfortunately, it has been noted that the software doesn't support this option.

I'm against it. Status quo is fine

In the end run, who cares? The counts only tell how many times someone has posted; they say nothing about the quality of the posts. How much benefit is there in a "+1" post? What extremely high post counts tell me most often is that the poster really needs to get a life outside FlyerTalk (moderators excepted, of course).
It matters. ;) Don't ask me why, though, I don't know why. :D |
Well, if you're going to count everything irrespective of substance, then please don't count anything.
If post count has no relationship to contribution, then it really has no legitimate reason to be shown. Why have a metric if it doesn't do anything useful? Just kill post count completely. (And that may kill most of those nonsense posts, since the posters won't get "credit" for them. If a tree falls in the forest when no one is there, who cares if it makes a noise or not?) |

Clearly, many people DO care. That was the whole idea behind the original move to actively DISCOUNT some posts. Further, even now, look how many posts and pages this thread alone has gotten.

You have to remember that Omni WAS for all off-topic posts. Off topic posts seem to be self policed pretty well and would seem to be a small percentage of total posts, unlike OMNI. |
Time Zone, Please?

"TalkBoard recommends that all posts posted anywhere on FlyerTalk (including OMNI, OMNI/PR, and Coupon Connection) count towards a member's post count” This vote will close on January 19, 2012 at 1:42 pm or after all TalkBoard members have registered their vote, whichever comes first. May I ask what time zone is it? Central Time, Mountain Time or else? It also seems every recent TB motion lacks the time zone specification. May I also suggest every TB motion be announced with the specific time zone from now on so members have a better idea when the voting time is up? |

And personally, I see no reason why your suggestion would cause nearly the weeping and nashing of teeth this one has. But I've been wrong before. :D |

Sharon will report the results of the completed votes, I'm sure, when she has a moment. That's her duty as TB VP. |

Are you referring to off topic posts or off topic forums (like lounges)? I think the suggested solution could easily handle this by moving the lounges to OMNI.com.
Off topic posts seem to be self policed pretty well and would seem to be a small percentage of total posts, unlike OMNI. FWIW - Omni is the single most popular forum on FT - bigger than the UA forum (IIRC). |

But I've been wrong before. :D FWIW, the last motion that specified the time zone was made on November 10th/11th, 2011 (depending on your world/time zone): http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/talkb...rlines-a3.html |
