You can always try. Otherwise you can always change your reservation on the spot to midsize and pay the upcharge.
Be ready to spend a lot of money on gas. That thing sounds great but it's very thirsty specially in the city.

monthly should be always 20x the daily rate (but that's my two sense). could run $0-300 at $15 per day in upgrade charges, and that's depending on the agent at the reservation desk or exit booth. also depends if they are willing to part with the vehicle for a month.

best way to find out is this site here:
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/avis-preferred-420/
AVIS at YYZ usually carries the low end SUV's such as the Hyundai Sante Fe to the mid-level Grand Cherokees, with an upgrade option to an Escalade (upon availability).

Does being an Avis preferred customer make any difference to the car I'm likely to get?

Ah, sorry. I saw the title 'Cars at YYZ' and assumed it was for all companies. However I have just seen the thread at the top.
This is the National forum. You'll find better answers if you ask your questions in Avis forum at http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/avis-preferred-420

3/19 YYZ
ES: All new 2016 Chevy Malibu LT, Nissan Altima, Buick Regal and Lacrosse and Hyundai Genesis and lots of Ford Flex Limited and other SUV. Luxury section had BMW X1 and Infiniti QX50 and maybe others.
3/20 Wellington
Cadillac XTS, Audi A4, Buick Regal, Nissan Maxima plus a mix of other SUVs
The Cadillac had Ontario plates. Didn't get a chance to see how well it was optioned.
