Yes they were set apart behind where the premium section is. I've seen 3 so far all of them metallic black.

Wondering if we can get it by reserving a PCAR or they would ask for an upcharge.

You can always try. Otherwise you can always change your reservation on the spot to midsize and pay the upcharge.
Be ready to spend a lot of money on gas. That thing sounds great but it's very thirsty specially in the city.

agreed 14.5 L per 100 km in city I average, 13.5 L highway. 90 L tank, runs me about $80 to fill at about 80 cents.

$15 upcharge per day isn't bad for a weekend fun especially with weekend rate + $20 off weekend coupon, but it's a bit too much for monthly rentals.

monthly should be always 20x the daily rate (but that's my two sense). could run $0-300 at $15 per day in upgrade charges, and that's depending on the agent at the reservation desk or exit booth. also depends if they are willing to part with the vehicle for a month.

Got a reservation with Avis out of YYZ for April 6th for a W class. What am I likely to get? Hoping for an Explorer.

best way to find out is this site here:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/avis-preferred-420/

AVIS at YYZ usually carries the low end SUV's such as the Hyundai Sante Fe to the mid-level Grand Cherokees, with an upgrade option to an Escalade (upon availability).

Does being an Avis preferred customer make any difference to the car I'm likely to get?

This is the National forum. You'll find better answers if you ask your questions in Avis forum at http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/avis-preferred-420

Ah, sorry. I saw the title 'Cars at YYZ' and assumed it was for all companies. However I have just seen the thread at the top.
