If you've got a small balance ($10 or $15) you should be able to close the account using the secure message feature on the website. If you have a larger balance, you can try the secure message, but you may get a message back to give them a call. We closed 4 accounts last month (my wife & I each had a personal & business that we had opened in Dec '09). The two personal accounts were small and we handled those on secure message (actually just had them transfer the small balances into the accounts we opened in March '10). The two bigger accounts (about $300 in each) we got a secure message back saying we had to call. Painless phone call (they tried to sell us a biz credit card) and we moved those balances over to the business accounts opened in March '10 as well. No separate action to cancel the debit card as it is tied to the account.

thank you so much. you used the secure message on chase's website correct?

Splittin' Aces Aug 19, 2010 12:21 pm

Yes. After you log in it is on the left side of the screen. It may say "You have no new messages". You click through that and compose a message. It usually takes them a day or two to get back to you.

Anyone knows how long I need to keep these Chase checking accounts to avoid "Early Closure Fee"? Is it 90 days or 180 days? Thanks

Sorry if this has been asked before.
How many days do I have to wait after closing the account to open a new one?

Does it matter since the offer is only once every calendar year?

Not until new offer comes out in 2011.

Have you read the fine print on the offer? Only 1 bonus checking account per calendar year is allowed.

I haven't done it yet, but I think you can get multiple biz bonuses if you open up accounts for multiple "businesses."

Wow, that would be nice. Although I'm not too hopeful. It's easy enough to get multiple EINs but how do you associate these EINs with new addresses. Or, perhaps, you are thinking about using the same address.

How about accounts for minors?

I confess that I haven't read the whole thread, but I thought my data points might be helpful.

I just applied online for the 25K account with the $25 debit card.

Everything seems to have worked fine, but I tried to use my Citibank AA Mastercard at first. That didn't work since Chase tries to do a cash advance, and I've turned off cash advances on this card (for just this sort of situation).

So I had a promotional $50 debit card laying around - and this was a perfect way to cash that out and get real money for it. I entered that, and I seem to be on my way.

AFAIK, there's no way to open an account online short of a debit or credit card. And a credit card would be a cash advance.

I think you need to fund this with at least $100 to get the bonus. So you need to get more money into this account.

I also used a debit card to fund my account. Tried to do the same with my wife's account but she doesn't have a debit card and there is no option to change the name on the funding card, i.e. I can't use my card to fund wife's account.

Anyone have a definitive answer as to the minimum age to open a checking account? It was brought up earlier in the thread, but there was only speculation. Family friends want to sign their kids up too, so wondering if that's possible. Thanks in advance if anyone knows!

When I inquired at Chase about opening for my son, they said minimum age 14 to open account in the name of child and thus qualify for bonus.

Lucky, there is a FT poster over on this thread on the Continental board, screen name El Chiflero, who has posted that he works for Chase. He may be able to answer a specific question like this. Also, if you have a Chase branch nearby (Tpa?) you can go in and ask. My experience is that they will do whatever they can to open up an account for you - that is what they get paid to do. A business account for a minor may be tougher to get though.
