Flight Changes
Many changes have been made due to Etihad schedule changes. In some cases, connecting flights are being swapped to nonstops. Some have been able to get this changed back by calling Etihad, others have not. You may have to repeat call / HUCA to get it switched back.

Update 12/28/14: Etihad will honor the fare per Forbes article.

Just completed our ORD-AUH-CDG-ORD trip. There was a woman at the entrance to the check-in counter at ORD lifting your carryon bags with her arm and telling you if you were over 7kg. I was, so did some minor shuffling into my checked bag, my wife's bag, and then stuck my heaviest tech items into my jacket pockets, because this policy is stupid. She then told me that her arm thought my bag was still too heavy, but waved us through to the check in desk after warning me that other people are going to get me for that heavy bag. The policy is a bit maddening, because apparently I'd have been fine if I'd taken a separate bag for my laptop, but using one bag wasn't.

At check-in, the friendly guy helping us didn't even lift my bag, just had me hold it out for him to put the cardboard coral class bag tag on it. No one else for the rest of the trip even pretended to care about the weight of our carry-on bags and there were a number of people with roller bags, so this appears to be some sort of policy they like to hassle you with when bored?

ORD-AUH was actually a better flight than I had anticipated, we had two seats on the left side in row 53, right behind where they narrow from 3-4-3 to 2-4-3 across, but the plane wasn't nearly full, so I moved two rows back from my wife so we each had our own little two-seat row to ourselves, which, along with some sleeping pills, made it not too bad a flight for actually sleeping. Flight was too warm for my comfort, and there were no air vents above our seats. Actually had a FA notice I was a bit sweaty while sleeping, asked me if I was warm, and then lowered the cabin temperature a bit so I'd be more comfortable, which I was.

The food was fine, had some sort of chicken/rice dish which wasn't bad for one meal, and some sort of mystery meat bbq sandwich for the other, I'm actually a fussy eater, but thought both were good having real metal utensils in economy feels nice compared to US carriers. I managed to wake up in time to get a Klondike bar as a snack, as well as some caramel corn later. Wife was mad I didn't wake her up for the Klondike bar (which was frozen so hard I had to snap pieces off with my teeth, but good!).

We got in a bit late to AUH, a little after 8:00 p.m. and settled in to wait until our 2:30 departure to CDG after grabbing a bite to eat at Burger King. I'd been hoping to use the free showers, as it'd been over 24 hours since we'd left home at this point, but my change in underclothes was stuffed back into my suitcase when I was over the limit on my carryon at check in. They have free wi-fi in the terminal which is slow and crappy like all free wifi is.

The A320 to CDG was pretty full, and a screaming baby in front of us a couple rows didn't add to the fun. Plane was kept dark and quiet for the whole trip, and I tried to sleep as much as I could, as we were picking up a rental car at CDG in the morning when we landed, to drive to the Loire river valley.

We had a direct flight on American from CDG-ORD to return home, was the normal AA service on a 767. Felt like a real downgrade from Etihad in terms of amenities, as the IFE system on Etihad was very nice, and the AA flight had nothing...

All in all, for the $250 we paid, I can't really complain about the Etihad flights, other than the annoyance about the carry-on bag weights.

We're doing ORD-AUH-JNB-AUH-ORD in September and have now had our itinerary changed to have 21 hour layovers both ways in AUH, which is a bit maddening. One would have been great, a chance to see the Mosque, but two is a little annoying...

I rented a car and thought driving wasn't that bad compared to Toronto especially on the highways.

you just have to make sure you dont drive in the most left lane.

The cities are congested but not a bad drive. Taxi's are cheap but can cost alot depending on where you are staying and where you want to go . I rented a car for $250 CAD for 2 weeks

One would have been great, a chance to see the Mosque, but two is a little annoying...

our leg from AUH - JFK had issues - The food Tray was broken , entertainment system didn't work. Food only had vegetarian options.

I asked if they could move 3 - 4 times before they told us no there isn't any seats together as we had a kid with us.

the staff was not friendly at all on Jet Airways plane. they didn't even smile - not sure if other people noticed as well. I have flown emirates and there is no comparison

Yea, most of our car rides were in the city...I definitely would not want to drive there. People were driving BMWs, Range Rovers, Ferraris, etc like they were POS cars without a care in the world.

Were you sleeping when they passed the snacks out? It looks like from the list of travelers above we were on the same flight. I was at an exit row. I had sliced apples, ice cream sandwich, caramel corn, and a very nasty tasting sandwich. I was amazed they started boarding so early 1 hr 35 mins before departure. I had paid 150.00 for an exit row and then after take off someone moved into the 2 empty seats which the flight attendants said was allowed. Sucks I paid for the seat and then other get for free, looked like 2 of the few seats that were open.

I loved all of the food except for the sandwich. I do like spicy Indian food though

I had SSSS on my AUH-ORD flight. I was asked to wait in a room with no explanation of what was going on. I entered the room at 7:50am for my 9:30 flight to ORD. At 9:10 they finally started me through security which took no time. There was a long line at customs though and I was afraid I was going to miss my flight and was a little freaked and pissed off. I got to the gate at 9:55 and they were still boarding like it was no problem or late. I wish they had just told me I was chosen for extra security, I would be in the room over an hour, and that regardless of how long it took the plane was not leaving without me it would've completely changed things.

Can anyone who has flown on the Jet Airways configured 777 JFK-AUH share any intel about row 60? It's the second row of two seats at the rear. Any extra legroom there?

No extra legroom, but there is extra shoulder room on the aisle side, which I think is more important on the 3-4-3 configuration. We had the 2nd row after the plane tapers to 2-4-2 and IMHO it was a great seat...I never got my seat bumped by any passenger or cart compared to constant bumping and seat back grabbing from aisle walkers when I was on the aisle of the center 4 seat section.

Driving is easy - but I live in the NorthEast urban landscape so normal to me. Americans will need to avoid the left most lane as speed can be excessive beyond what you are willing to try by the locals.
The general usage of cars is semi-funny like viewing two-three Lams or Ferrari going over speed bumps at the mall and you thinking - YOU ARE GOING TO PARK THAT THING IN A MALL PARKING GARAGE WITHOUT CONCERN?

Etihad allowed you to fly AUA-CDG-ORD with the final segments on AA?
I am in the same situation for a flight to Mumbai from JFK originally on the AA-code shares; Etihad of course, changed the routing to its JFK-AUA non-stop and will not allow me to change it back. Loss of brief stopover in CDG in both directions and loss of AAdvantage miles for the entire itinerary.

We were in 53 H&J which worked out good. We were'nt bothered by anyone and did have extra leg room on the window side because seats were shifted. Probably our fault we missed the snacks, I thought one of us was awake but I guess I was wrong.
If you like spicy then all was good, but sandwich was nasty that's why I was unhappy about not having the snacks lol.
I wish I had booked another flight for fall but was happy to just get one.

I haven't heard from anyone who enjoyed the mystery meat sandwich...my wife and I each opened it up, took one look and wrapped it back up.

The bread from the mystery meat sandwiches was good! Except the parts that had the slime from the meat.

Thoughts about IAD-AUH-BOM

Just arrived at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel after the marathon trip from IAD.

First, the carry-on weighing thing for a second time during boarding created chaos and fostered bad feelings and anger among the pax. Multiple people were yelling loudly when told that bags that had passed muster at check in were now overweight. The Etihad people were cold and unyielding in the zero tolerance enforcement, despite the plane being a third empty. Typically, irate people pointed out that this would lose business for EY. The process was badly administered with second checks being done while a long line waited to board. Flying reimagined should be reimagined once more to do away with this.

Second, the 787 is an impressive plane. Just be sure not to select seats in row 22. Minimal recline and screen-in-the face when row 21 reclines, resulting in inability to position anywhere near comfortably and ensuring excruciating trip. Our crew was coldly efficient for the mostpart, except for the funny and friendly German FA with short red hair. She was fantastic!
Flight clocked in at under 11 hours. Second leg on EY206 was better in that the seats on the 777-200 were more comfortable and had more recline. The crew was friendly and terrific, especially Sammy from Melbourne. Bad: the IFE and power ports didn't work. Despite departing almost an hour late due to late equipment arrival from FRA, we arrived ontime.

My wife commented on how immaculate the FAs looked with stylish uniforms, hair, and makeup being perfection. She continued how it was a far cry from the domestic Big 3 experience at home!

I'm usually a fan of the mystery meat sandwiches up in the air. I remember having more than my fair share of CO's "meatloaf sandwiches" on a nearly empty PHL-IAH flight. Looking forward to November and seeing what all the fuss is about.
