Well I think it is fairly obvious that their control mechanism is to delay the EEOs long enough so we only have a couple weekends to use them. :D
In all seriousness, Chris implied in his reply in this thread that electronic coupons were controlled to one per elite member. It really doesn't matter how, but Chris would be the one to whom that question should be addressed as none of us know. |
To a certain extent these offers are not giveaways. They are not only a perk for your customers, they also serve as promotions for the services in the coupons. As frequent travelers we know that hotel restaurants are usually (except for certain conventions) half full at most. Full service hotels tend to have low occupancy during the weekends. Providing a free meal (when one is purchased) or a free hotel day on the weekend (when one is purchased) is a traditional promotion (see the Entertainment Card, which built a huge business with similar promotions), and makes sense for the company and the customers.
I'm not arguing that these offers are not good perks. They are. But to think that somehow Marriott will be upset or suffer financial discomfort if too many of us take advantage of the offers or use more than one of the offers more than once, doesn't make sense to me. In my opinion, the more these offers are utilized, the happier Marriott will be, and the more successful the promotions will be considered. If you utitlize the offer, you will pay for a weekend night when the hotel will otherwise have an empty room, and you will buy a dinner at a restaurant that will otherwise not have that business. Sounds good for Marriott and for us. |

Well said, Ohmark....
I'd also add that a measure of control for Marriott kicks in with the list of "exempted" hotels that tend to be busy on weekends, and thus don't offer the second free nights. And then, of course, these are always subject to availaibility. But basically, I'm sure than when a property traditionally has excess perishable inventory on weekends, they'd rather have a bunch of folks at 50% than nobody paying nothing! As a businessman, I'd sure take that deal! |
Called today & was told to be patient as the internet coupons are to be posted this week  :(

(Just kidding. :p ) Called Plat. Reservations Line and they recognized it and a $100 dollar Bonus Buck as valid for consecutive two-night reservations. Net of it is that for four nights at the Ren Mayflower the bite will average out to $101.75 per night (before taxes). Outcomes like this cause me to forgive their gaffes. |

Don't get me wrong: I hope they do have this tightly controlled so that people don't have unlimited EEO's. I know Marriott doesn't intend for us to have unlimited EEO's (frankly, two each at Marriott and Renaissance should take care of even the Gold/Plat road warriors, given the limited timeline of the certificates). I'm just trying to understand what's really happening here. My fear would be that they've inadvertently created a loophole that some could exploit - say, printing off 500 online certs and giving them to everyone in their office. (I'd even say eBaying them, but whenever I see an EEO on eBay, people don't seem interested in it.) If hotels are instructed to look at the MR# when someone uses an online cert, but allow anyone to use the original cert, then perhaps the biggest loophole is closed. If you're a Gold/Plat staying at Marriott every weekend, perhaps Marriott is simply saying "more power to ya" - we'll take the business, even at 50% off. You have a very valid point. When I say draw the line I really mean in the spirit of the promotion, not enforcement. I know with us, they would obviously be able to easily track the use of the coupon. I doubt it is a "flag" but I would be certain that all of your rate usage, type of room all of that sort of thing is in a central data base. Where I would think it is less trackable would be us giving it to non-elite members...even it your number is on it, I would doubt that would show up in a data dump. |

In view of the mixed experiences previously reported I'll post mine after we return. |
