If I understand correctly, I can reserve 7-nights for a hotel and also get miles with a 1:1 ratio.

Now I'm quite confused. I too had hread about a 1:1 ratio, but I see no such ratio on the linked chart. I just see stuff like:
Hotel + Air Package 1:
7 Nights + 50,000 Miles or Avios 7 Nights + 70,000 Miles or Avios 7 Nights + 100,000 Miles or Avios 7 Nights + 120,000 Miles or Avios
Category 1-5 200,000 | View 220,000 | View 250,000 | View 270,000 | View
Category 6 230,000 | View 250,000 | View 280,000 | View 300,000 | View
Category 7 260,000 | View 280,000 | View 310,000 | View 330,000 | View
Category 8 290,000 | View 310,000 | View 340,000 | View 360,000 | View
Tier 1-3 350,000 | View 370,000 | View 400,000 | View 420,000 | View
Tier 4-5 470,000 | View 490,000 | View 520,000 | View 540,000 | View

Participating Airlines: Aeromexico, Air Canada, Alaska Airlines, British Airways, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines, GOL/Varig, Hawaiian Airlines, United Airlines, US Airways, Virgin Atlantic
Using 270,000 points to get only 120,000 Miles is not my idea of 1:1!

So what am I missing??? (Even if I factor out the hotel points cost, there's only one package for cat 1 -5, and I could pay well less than 150,000 points for 7 nights at a cat 3 or maybe even 4, couldn't I?)

Also I see some mentions of 5 nights in this thread, but the chart only seems to show 7 nights?

The incremental additional miles after you consider the hotel are 1:1. Cat 6, for example, if you consider the hotel worth 180K, then the miles are 50K for 50 K, 120 for 120, etc. People are saying the cat 5 nights are worth 150, and the 120 miles are 1:1, thus arriving at the 270 in your example.

If you directly traded for the miles it might be 1.2 million points for 120k miles.

Not sure about cat 1-5, but I'm planning on getting a cat 7 package with 120,000 miles for 330,000 points. If my math is correct, that works out to 210,000 points for 7 nights at a cat 7 (35k per night, fifth night free), leaving the remaining 120,000 points (of the 330k) for 120,000 miles. That's why it's referredt to as 1:1, which works out to be a pretty good deal if you get your MR points from hotel stays.

Marriott Vacation Club owners seem to be able to take advantage of a 5 night travel package option. The 5-night option is not available to non-MVC owners.

How do I redeem hotel portion of travel package?

I called in to redeem a travel package. Miles have posted. They told me that I would get an e-cert and then just reserve hotel portion from the website. But the following is listed in my certificates section:

7 nights at a Category 1-5 hotel, up to 120,000 frequent flyer miles or Rapid Rewards Points and 25% off Hertz car rental

When I book a hotel using points it does not give me the option to use an e-cert like it did with the cat. 1-4 certs. Also I have no idea how to use the hertz award.

arizonawildcat Jan 9, 2013 3:29 pm

When I redeemed my points for a travel award a few days ago, the rep explained that I could always make a traditional reservation and then just call in to have it manually applied if it does not automatically recognize the e-cert.

BKKLEE Jan 9, 2013 3:29 pm

do I understand that when you choose a 7-night award stay and say "buy it" that the 7-night available cert is not given as an option? if so, then just call back MRs and have them execute the award cert for your resee.......

If you have the hotel part of a travel package, you can redeem the award online and call Marriott to have them attach the hotel certificate to your award reservation. Alternatively, you can just call Marriott and have them book the award reservation and attach the award certificate.

Apprehensive about the vacation package

I like the 1:1 points to miles aspect, but looking at Italy in May and none of the Cat 8 properties in Rome show award availability for 7 nights. The Cat 5 Il Ciocco shows no (7 night) award availability. Do I call the PP line (never used it) to see if they can force the package? Wait and see if avail shows up? There is some availability in Cat 2/3 AC properties, but this is a special trip we will never make again. Anyone have experience with vacation packages?

I have used them a lot. Here is a blog I wrote on Marriott Insiders. (link below) Comprehensive info. on using them. Used them for Rome. I have always built ours around hotel availability first.

I used a Travel Package last year for a family trip to Orlando. Very easy to redeem, plus the WN points counted towards the CP. Sounds like your biggest worry would be finding hotel availability.

Good luck and have a wonderful trip.

I hate to say this, but is very late to be looking for 7 night European availabilty in May in the major capitals. And may be too late for flight availability as well. For once in a lifetime trips I'd be on it a year out.

Point well taken, and health issues are dictating the timing. I've already identified the flights. I think I'll try communicating directly with hotels to see if I can break something loose.

I had the hotel portion of a travel package booked for Christmas, which had to get cancelled due to an unexpected surgery. I wanted to book the same hotel for March but two of the seven nights were unavailable. The platinum reservations agent put me on hold, called the hotel, and secured the two extra nights for me.

Check night by night for the period in May that you are interested in to see if any of the nights are available to build around. However, the nicer Marriott hotels in Italy are very popular....
