On my points booking back in June I was asked to pre-pay for the seaplane maybe about a month out. But when I told them the bank of maldives payment portal wasn't working because Maldives uses old 3D Secure and it wouldn't take my Chase Ritz-Carlton card, they said not to worry about it and that they'd charge it during the stay.

Tbh if anyone is being asked they should just make the same excuse. Not acceptable to demand advance payments through a portal that is not compatible various Marriott-branded cards. Unless BoM has added 3D Secure EMV support in the past few months to support international cards.

I’m sure there is, but there’s free wifi at the airport and you’ll be trapped on a small island with wifi everywhere, so why bother?

Wifi in the airport and throughout the island, so not really necessary.

There are mobile phone shops at the airport for both local providers if you'd like a local SIM. My advice echoes the others to rely on the Wi-Fi service available at the resort and airport if you don't plan to be heading elsewhere.

Yes, I can confirm. We're traveling next month and just received the pre-payment email. Also, I was pleased to see we were charged at the old seaplane rate! They must have locked folks in that booked before rates went up.

We are planning to go for a week. We are planning on doing the all inclusive plan for the week. The last day we will most likely leave midday. I am reading you cannot downgrade the meal plan. Is it possible to eliminate it the last day and just take the platinum breakfast?

You won't be charged for the plan on your departure day. The place you could see cost savings is not doing AI on your arrival day. We will be arriving late in the day so we are not planning to start a meal plan until our first full day and will do a la carte the first night.

There is a photographer, and we saw a number of people utilizing her. Can't help you on booking requirement as we didn't utilize it, but I wouldn't want to book as I'd try and get the photos with good light and weather.

Looks like the Marriott website didn't actually charge me for the seaplane or the trip insurance even though I went through with the booking. Only points got deducted.

They don't charge for those things at booking. If you bought the insurance it will be charged by Allianz separately and the seaplane bill will come in about 30 days prior to arrival with a link to pay.

It seems that roaming is not a thing in the Maldives. My phone usually works everywhere just fine (Verizon) and I have used roaming in a lot of places (from close by and typical, like Canada and Mexico, to far away and questionable, like UAE and Ukraine). In Maldives it pretended to connect to a cellular network but never actually succeeded in loading anything. It's not a big deal. There is wifi at the resort, and even if you do venture out to the real world in Male while waiting for a flight, it's so small, just make sure to download the maps in advance and you will survive just fine.

Show of hands: how many people took the time to check out the town outside of the airport? The boat ride is not bad, and the city is so satisfyingly hectic after the super chill resort.
