Legacy to New Travel Package Conversion (effective August 2018)
A Marriott supervisor can currently convert your legacy travel package into the new category mapping. If you hold a Category 6, 8, or Tier 1-3 legacy certificate, it's ideal to downgrade your certificate before converting so that points don't potentially get lost in the process.

When converting your legacy certificate to a new certificate your prior certificate is cancelled and your new certificate will (in most cases) have an expiration date that is 12 months from the date of issuance (today).

The codes for the New Category partial packages are:
5-night packages
  • OC5=530T/P530 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC6=570T/P570 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC7=610T/P610 is now NC5 QP61 (refund value: 45K)
  • OC8=650T/P650 is now NC5 QP?? (Refund value: 75k)
  • OC9=690T/P690 is now NC6 QP69
7-night packages
  • NC4 QP83 = OC5 830T/P830 (refund value: 45K)
  • NC4 QP87 = OC6 870T/P870 (refund value: 75K)
  • NC5 QP91 = OC7 910T/P910 (refund value: 105K)
  • NC5 QP95 = OC8 950T/P950 (refund value: 135K)
  • NC6 QP99 = OC9 990T/P990 (refund value: 165K)
  • NC6 QP99 = OC Tier 1-3 L830 (refund value: 195K)
  • NC7 QL87 = OC Tier 4-5 L870 (refund value: 315K)
Other 7-night packages
  • NC5 QP88 = OC7 P880 (refund value: 135K)
  • NC5 QP92 = OC8 P920 (refund value: 165K)
legend:
NCx = new certificate category
QPxx = post-merger converted partial package
OCx = old certificate category
QLxx = post-merger converted partial package (only QL known so far is QL87 for NC7)
xx0T = initial package;
Pxx0 = partial package;

For best practices on converting OC to NC, I’ve copied post # 1181 here. Thank you jameswes!

(Also, never use the word UPGRADE. You must say you want to CONVERT your certs.)

New data point for the new year.

I've read/followed the majority of this thread and now that I have a plan for how to use the travel certificates I made it happen

Last July, I purchased two OC1-5 travel packages. I have an upcoming trip that I wanted to use the certificates to book two rooms at an NC5 hotel.

1) Verified that I had an extra 120,000 MR points in my account (2x60,000 to upgrade from NC4 to NC5)
2) Call the UK Marriott # in the wiki (+44 20 7012 7312). In total, the call took about 25 minutes.
3) Explain that I have a booking I wanted to make, and I wanted to Cancel my two 830T certificates and convert them to two QP91 certificates. I did need to be clear with the rep that I was going to be using additional points from my account to upgrade the certificate.
Canceling two 830T (OC1-5) added 90,000 points (2x45000) to my account
Ordering two QP91 (NC5) subtracted 210,000 points (2x105K) from my account
4) The rep said that their "specialist" wasn't in the office, but she would leave detailed notes and have him do it the next day
5) True to form, the next day (today), I got an emails saying that my old certificates were canceled and new certificates were ordered.
Email clearly states that 830T certs were canceled
Second email clearly states that QP91 certs were ordered and 210K points were redeemed
Email (and account) state that the expiration is one year from today
As typical, App is up-to-date, website doesn't show the updated information yet.
IMPORTANT! Possible Points Advance Implications of March 5 category changes: There’s a (potential) issue with the category changes and Points Advance reservations. Marriott included the following information when they emailed some of us about the upcoming changes: “Points Advance — Members who wish to book a points advance redemption under the current Marriott Rewards and SPG award chart are encouraged to order redemption certificates before March 5 to lock in the rate. On March 5, redemption bookings are subject to the new unified program award chart.” We’ve reached out to Marriott to confirm the practical implications of this verbiage, as it sounds like Points Advance reservations will revert to the new pricing if they don’t have certificates attached prior to March 5. To be on the safe side, if your hotel is increasing in category be sure your TP certificate is attached to the reservation before March 5.

Concerning use of TP for peak or off-peak, see post 2179:

It's easy to see the cert and expiration when unattached but once attached you cannot. I had 3 certs, the one that went poof was not the one that I requested nor the most logical nor the nearest expiration. It simply defies logic why the agent acted in such a fashion.

On the plus side, I got this taken care of less than 5 minutes.

Not a new thing, as this happened to me last year also. I had 2 certificates, one had already been extended (I wasn't aware you could extend multiple times) so I wanted to use that one. I told the agent, she confirmed the proper one, and then used the other. Of course I figured it out after hanging up. It wasn't a huge issue, but still frustrating ...

I know there has been plenty of discussion regarding upgrading certs, but I was wondering if anyone has successfully downgraded to a NC package. I have an OC9 that was attached to an old cat 9 booking, and the property is now a cat 6 (so everything mapped fairly and I'm not losing out on anything). I'm wondering if I can detach the cert, and change it over to an NC5 cert, get some points back (60k? for difference between NC6/NC5), then book a NC5 property.

It wouldn't be the end of the world if I can't downgrade to NC5 since our existing reservation(s) is at a nice property which I am sure we'll enjoy. But, since it's a family trip with two rooms, the family likely wouldn't notice a downgrade and it saves points/cash for a later trip.

Where to complain?

I have an OC8. I called Marriott to see if I can upgrade (and I assume pay some additional points) to NC6 because the hotel I want to use it at now is cat 6 (it was 8 pre-merger). After being on hold with one rep forever who thought maybe she could help but finally said she could not do that, she transferred me to supposedly a supervisor. He absolutely would not even let me speak beyond my initial explanation of what I wanted and continued to very rudely talk over me. I then asked for his name, and he wouldn't give it to me but he hung up instead. I then got an email saying my OC8 is cancelled - something I NEVER asked for!

I am beyond mad about the rep who would NOT let me speak, and I was on hold for over 90 mins only to have no resolution but instead my OC8 cancelled, something I did not want unless I was getting a new cert issued (preferably with some type of upgrade since obviously it's possible). I want my problem solved, but I really, really want to complain about that rep.

Yikes! In addition to not resolving your issue that hold time is crazy!!

I signed up for an account just to reply to this... I had a very similar experience... the rep was asking for the last 4 of the card associated with the account. I didn't have the card on me, I asked to validate the account another way and the rep wouldn't let me. I asked to speak to a supervisor and he said no, that without account verification he couldn't transfer me. And he just hung up on me. I am so mad, we stayed at Hilton and had a good experience. After I use this certificate we won't be going back to Marriott.

I too was trying to upgrade our certificate because the hotel that I was going to use it cancelled my reservation, it's a new hotel that is delayed so it won't be completed in time for our trip but I didn't even get an email notifying me of the cancellation. I will be calling back this afternoon, hopefully I can get someone to help me out.

Well you could have been on hold for 2 hours to be transferred to a sup who then couldn't do anything (or so she said) and refused any comp points for the ridiculous wait times!
She, unlike others, claimed I had to call rewards during their business hours (anyone else know if this is true?) couldn't do anything with a cert - oh, and I had originally called the "rewards" number and none of the 3 people I spoke to before her had mentioned that they weren't actually in the "rewards" dept,
Oh - and the annoying message about "you can....website".... was back

Called the platinum line today to extend an old certificate. They reissued the corresponding new one and all in took about 5 minutes. I asked about upgrading and rep said they don't offer that anymore.

In the new program do you get elite night credit when you redeem your 7 night certificate? I seem to remember pre-merger that point stays counted elite nights but not certificates. Tried search and didn't find an answer.

Award nights are eligible elite nights regardless of whether you use a certificate or points. Points are just used to order a certificate.

Has anyone been able to upgrade an OC9 to a NC7 for additional points (like I was promised I would be able to by the agent when I redeemed my TP)?

I tried tirelessly but wasn't able to - between that and not being able to book any of the SPG properties I want to stay at, I ended up just cashing in for 165k

I think that is going to be the way to go for me too. Cashing in my OC8 and using points to pay the extra for my Wailea Marriott reservation for Christmas and New Years. Currently they are selling rooms at $1,100 USD a night, so considering a garden view room wont go for less than $800 a night, it still makes sense to pay the 300,000 points for the 7 night stay. If it was not for another FT that made many reservation in those dates and then cancel the ones that did not work for him last month, I would never have had access to this hotel at year's end, and before they switch to high and low season pricing with points. Good thing is that Marriott's OLD Revenue Management system puts back to the inventory the cheapest room with points, even though the hotel is only selling expensive ocean front rooms at the time. So thank you Marriott, it was a good run for a couple of years. Now back to Hilton for a while until you can get your act together again. If not, maybe it will be time for me to try Hyatt or other brands while staying at hotels for work.

PD: also thanks Marriott for giving me two years of Southwest Companion pass too, while also cashing in with this OC8 certificate extended a couple times.and tons of WN Points. I will miss the good ol days.
