I've been trying to see if I could get a OC5 upgraded to NC5, but I've been hitting a brick wall.

Yeah, mine too. I need to detach it but am pretty confused what all needs to be done with my packages so have not done so. I would really feedback on how I am thinking to proceed. Would appreciate critiques/corrections of my methods:

1) My OC5 unattached certificate got accidentally attached to a NC5 hotel reservation that I planned to cancel anyway. Detach, trade OC5 830T for NC4 QP83 for 0K, leave unattached. Cancel this NC5 reservation.
2) My OC6 is attached to a NC4 reservation that I wish to keep. Detach OC6, trade OC6 870T for NC5 QP91 (for 30K?). Then, attach NC4 QP83 (in #1 above) to the NC4 reservation.
3) My OC7 is attached to a NC5 reservation that I wish to keep. Stay.
4) My OC8 is attached to a NC5 reservation that I wish to keep. Detach, trade OC8 950T for NC5 QP91 (is this right??? and [automatically?] receive 30K refund), then attach NC5 QP91 to the NC5 reservation.
5) My OC9 is attached to a NC7 reservation. Stay.
6) Use the NC5 QP91 (from #2 above) for a new reservation sometime in the next year.

Really dumb question - for #s 3 and 5 above, can I just keep the old certificates attached to the reservations and not touch the reservations? Does it benefit me to change them to new certificates and then reattach to the same old reservations? Does it benefit me to keep them as old certificates? Does it not matter?

Sense may have prevailed for Platinum Elites, but maybe not for the rest of us mortals. I am being told 'absolutely no ability to upgrade to a higher category'. Thats calling the US Marriott Rewards number.

Do you know if they converted to the new package level and then upgraded it? Or just converted it straight from OC5 to NC5?

Another DP: I called the US rewards line about another matter (All my SPG lifetime nights disappeared August 18, and the ticket I put in 4 weeks ago has still not been answered), and asked if I could convert my existing OC6 to a NC5. He went off for 2 minutes to look up the values, and told me I could for 30k points. I told him to go ahead, he went off for another 3 minutes and it is done. I received an email that my 870T was cancelled, and another that QP91 was redeemed.

Platinum here, no luck getting upgrade either. Tried about a half dozen times.

Were you trying for an upgrade from an existing New Category, or from an Old Category? I like to use the word "conversion" - my current read is that Marriott does not want to allow certificates to be upgraded, for whatever reason. However, if you hold an unconverted Old Certificate, they need to make a change to it anyway so it doesn't matter much to them what New Category you want (as long as you pay the difference of course).

Called in (US line) and try to upgrade my OC5 to NC5 (7N) and no go, after a very long hold. Just told me they had been told they can't do that "yet" but also state this option "might" not be available ever again. After I hung up, I noticed they didn't convert any of my OC5 certs. I planned to use them in July next year, so, I am in no rush, just thought I will get the cert upgrade now while there is an opportunity....but :(

I would love to upgrade my OC5s to NC5s. But since it would be to use on SPG hotels, I don't see the point until we can actually attach the NCs to a reservation. Something tells me that upgrading certs to just leave them there for awhile is a recipe for disaster...
