I have 2x 5 night category (now) 5 certs. What are the chances of combining both and getting an upgrade to a 7 or 8 to one 5 night cert?

Before August 18th I booked a Category 8 hotel with my Southwest Category 5 travel package certificate adding an additional 90,000 points from my account. This certificate expires January of 2019. Our plans may change and I am thinking of cancelling this reservation.
Will I get the 90,000 points back and my Category 5 certificate? (This is what I would like to happen) If so, will the certificate have the same expiration date of January 2019 or will it be extended? It was already extended once. Can I add points to change the category 5 certificate again? Thanks for any help... I've read through everything but not sure I understand how this works since the change. 2) Convert the Old Cat 8 to an NC - NC4 is for the OC5 at 45K. If you opt for NC4 Code QP83, you would receive the difference between OC8 surrender value of 135K MINUS the 45K, that is the 90K refund you are looking for. The entries would look a +135K and then a -45K. You should receive confirmation emails on both transactions. Do stay on the phone with the rep UNTIL you receive both emails. 3) Whenever the cert is reissued, it would generate a new date and new life, UNLESS the rep takes it upon himself to backdate it to the originally issued date (happened on me). 4) We do not know going forward whether upgrade is still allowed. Currently it is a HUCA but mostly successful cases. Read MasterGeek's post 359 that is 2 posts after yours, and follow his 3-steps simple instruction when calling. He just successfully upgraded a NC4 to NC5 paying 60K cost (that is equivalent to OC5 to OC7, at 30K increment at each level). |

Thanks for the update! That makes sense. No longer need it though.
The Combine Account process now is largely glitch-free, provided the entries in your 2 accounts are correct before the process. Last night I experimented with my husband's accounts as his had only 7 SPG pts left - it went smoothly and his 7 turned to 21 SPG pts showed on the 2nd step of the process, (first step is for you to give your SPG credential, second step is giving you the point balance of each account, third step tells you how long it takes for various items to transfer, fourth step is to confirm the intention to combine, then it is DONE). Today about 30 min ago I initiated the Combine Account on mine. It went exactly as last night. Once it is DONE, Marriott point balance reflects the addition of the SPG bal. Activities would take 48 to 72 hours to show up. So if both your accounts are correct now, you can / should combine them. I would recommend to keep the Marriott account because it is the "native" platform - far less glitch-prone. Of course I did take screen shots of both accounts balances and activities, as well as each step of the process, just in case. I think I would only keep the screen shots of the original account activities, esp the SPG one. The rest can be discarded. One thing of improvement is, Marriott site now has options to choose whether you want to use point advance or not, EVEN THOUGH you already have enough pts in the account for the redemption. IIRC in the past if you have over 1/3 of the needed pts, the site would try to take all of it, and left the reservation with an unpaid balance. Now it let you choose. Also if a reward night reservation is not paid for yet, it would not send out a confirmation email on the reservation. This can be a good or bad thing (some people may forget they have an existing reservation out there, and forget to cancel it in time.) Agree re keeping Marriott account, esp as the old SPG number is defunct anyway, can't see much point in keeping the one with the new number. I'd been holding off as SPG Amex points still hadn't shown up but in the background it should all be linked anyway so perhaps no point in now waiting. I made a points advance booking and *did* receive a confirmation email, even though it isn't paid for yet - when I go into the booking it says "Please remember to order e-certificate(s) once you earn the required points. If you have not earned the required points 10 days prior to your reservation, customer support will contact you to discuss payment options." but doesn't mention this in the e-mail confirmation. |

Interesting - I don't understand why the SPG got multiplied by 3 during the process, I thought the balances were all already updated?

I have not received a single confirmation email point advance bookings even before August 18th. Post Aug 18th I have made 4 or 5 point advance bookings (and canceled 3 of them), never receive any confirmation email but I do make screen shot of the booking AND more importantly, the cancellation shown on the screen. On the AMEX cards forum, people said their AMEX pts were correctly mapped to their combined accounts. Your not yet posted pts probably are those that got caught during the first couple weeks of the merger. But there are also some resolutions there. DPs were that the twitter team seems to be able to help better than the regular depts. |
Ah OK - that makes sense - was wondering if you'd managed a cunning 9x multiplier somehow ;)
Interesting, my points advance was made a couple of days ago and received email within seconds. Good to hear mapping worked with combined accounts, agree probably caught up in the whole mess - Amex washing their hands of it but I can't close my SPG card (thus costing me a pro-rata annual fee refund) until they show up, will try Twitter team. |
Does anyone know if it is possible to attach a lesser OC certificate to a reservation? That is - is it now (or was it previously) possible to attach an OC5 certificate to an OC7/NC5 reservation?
I ask because I had an OC5 that I discovered today was attached to a NC5 hotel reservation. I am almost certain that it was done by accident by a CSR when I asked them to detach a different certificate and attach it to this hotel reservation. But I am just curious if that somehow upgraded my certificate or not. I am guessing not, and I do not plan to use this reservation. |

I heard of this happening prior to the transition in a thread here. Somehow a rep stuck an OC5 onto a Tier 5 reservation. No idea what the outcome was though.

I haven't seen much here about the 5 nights packages? I purchased a cat 5 and a cat 6 package, 5 nights, prior to the merger. Is the 5 night cat 6 eligible for some kind of refund because of the way the categories mapped, similar to the 7 night cat 6?
Also, has anyone had success upgrading a 5 night package? |

Just another datapoint.
Cat 6 Pre merger attached to a Marriott hotel 1. Called and picked up about 1-2 minutes 2. Detached Cert 3. Convert Cert to QP83(Cat 1-4) and received 30k points back 4. Done less than 5 minutes. 5. Transferred to SPG to try to attach cert to a Sheraton instead 6 Waited 20-30 minutes while the person tried to do it but couldn't. They kept saying they can't see the cert to try to attach it. They can see my 2 25k certs. 7. Gave up so probably going to attach back to the Marriott I had originally booked. |
Success Story - Upgraded OC6 to NC5
Just got off the phone with a Marriott rep that I reached through the standard Customer Support line. (I'm Platinum Premier, so not sure if it directs me a certain way.)
I was on the phone for a total of 50 minutes, but I covered a bunch of different issues... the most important of which was upgrading my old 5 night category 5 cert to a new 5 night category 5 cert. (By the way, I had upgraded from an OC5 to an OC6 for 15,000 points just prior to the merger date.) Without really any pleading or explaining on my part, the CSR easily upgraded the cert for me! He told me it would cost 20k more points, but I really didn't care! (Better yet... as it turned out, between backing out the original OC5 to OC6 upgrade and adding the OC6 to NC5 upgrade, it ended up costing me less than that!) My faith in Marriott is restored! |

If the 5-night packages are handled in the same way that 7-night packages are supposed to be, you should be able to receive a refund of 15,000 points when converting and old 5-night Cat 6 to a new Cat 1-4. alternatively, you might be able to pay an additional 20,000 points for a new Cat 5. Please notice the qualifiers "supposed to," "should," and "might" in my answer

I have an OC8 and converting to NC5 doesn't make sense for me as all hotels we are interested in are Cat 6 or 7.
1: Is it possible to upgrade from OC8 to NC6 or NC7? 2: If no to the above am I better off just asking for a full refund for the OC8? If so how many points would that be worth and is it really a bad deal? Sorry if this has been answered but I went through the forms and couldn't get confirmation. |
