Green Dot Cards @ Vons (and most likely Safeway)

These cards can be purchased for $10 and loaded up to $500, with a $4 loading fee. They have a PIN and can be used for MO purchases (no fee for using the PIN function). So there is a definite way to earn miles, but not a a good rate, right? Well, I know that the card can be "upgraded" to allow $2,500 limit instead of the usual $500. My question is, can it be loaded $2,500 all at once? Never figured it out, because it costs like $40 to upgrade, but if some adventuous fellow wants to find out and report back we may have a good choice.

Limitations on Value. The minimum initial amount of value that can be "loaded" or added to the Card is $20.00. The maximum amount of value that may be "reloaded" or added to the Card on any calendar day is limited to $2,500.The maximum amount of value that can reside on the Card at any time shall be $2,500. Bank, in its sole discretion, may increase or decrease these limits from time to time upon notice to you.

Oops, it's per day not year. :o

It has $2500/yr max load. :td:

[QUOTE]

The cardholder agreement you referenced says its a $2500 per calendar DAY load, which seems quite good to me considering you could also buy several cards.

There are actually several of these kind of off-the-shelf credit cards available. Look around at check cashing places and some convenience stores.

I'll try to go buy one of these this week, but it will take probably a month to see if the miles are actually credited to my FF mile account. This green dot find has definite potential.

Here's another one I've been looking at lately:

The load fees on that one look bad.

Deposits From To Deposit Fee Of
$ 20.00 $ 100.99 $ 3.00
$ 101.00 $ 200.99 $ 6.00
$ 201.00 $ 350.99 $ 10.50
$ 351.00 $ 500.99 $ 15.00
$ 501.00 $ 750.99 $ 22.50
$ 751.00 $1,000.99 $ 30.00
$1,001.00 $1,500.99 $ 40.00
$1,501.00 $2,000.99 $ 50.00

Plus from the FAQ it looks like you can't use it for debit purchases (ie, buying money orders), only for credit purchases and ATM withdrawals.

This deal may not be around to long. I just went to my local Vons and all the Green Dot Prepaid Master Cards had a red sticker under the purchase price which read “CASH ONLY”. I have been trying to justify this deal. It seems that you buy the card for $10 and load $500. Subsequent loads are $500 for $4. ATM withdrawals are $2.50. Monthly maintenance fee is $5. I can not determine what the maximum $ amount allowed per ATM withdrawal is. Assuming WAMU maximum of $800 it looks like 1500 points for 3 loads plus 2 withdrawals ( $12 + $5= $17). This does not consider the extra $6 cost of the initial card purchase or the $5 monthly maintenance charge. If an Amex earning double points for Market and Pharmacy purchases can be used for purchase and reloads of the card this deal may fly. Any thoughts?

If they changed it to cash only then the deal is totally dead. I tried it once, and you should have seen the look on the clerk's face when I said I wanted to load $500. First they said "cash only" but the wrapper clearly says "cash or credit card only" then I was asked to show ID THREE TIMES. Is the $2,500 limit now available on normal cards though?

I just heard that my girlfriend had her VisaBuxx cancelled. We were each putting the other person as the "teen". So, it looks like only one person can be the teen or parent now.

Please explain, is this on the BofA visabuxx page?

imasosec Sep 4, 2005 7:01 am

WWhen I log into my BoA VisaBuxx personal account page, it is the status I get for each card. However, no e-mails have been sent to me regarding the status of each card.

Have the cards been shut down?

imasosec Sep 4, 2005 9:42 am

I'm still trying to determine that. I called CR last night - they gave me a number to call which is only open dring business hours, so I have to wait until Tuesday.

US Bank Visabuxx final loophole closed

After US Bank closed all my Visabuxx cards in May, I applied for a couple new ones, and it worked for a month but on Sep 1 all cards were cancelled. I got no email or notice but could not reload them. When I called customer service I was told to talk to "risk management". At "risk management" they couldn't figure out right away what the problem was but after putting me on hold for 5 minutes they said my name was now flagged for losing US Bank money because I was not using the cards in the "manner intended", and not only had my cards been closed but no further applications from me would be accepted. However, she did agree to refund the $10 annual fee (plus my balance) on the new card I had called about.
