OT: anybody have a recent datapoint re Amex variable GC? Did you look on your receipt and see if you earned fuel points?
(Please note I'm not recommending anybody buy one for MS, my curiosity is for a unique non-MS scenario.)

AMEX earned fuel points the last time I tried it.

As far as the new coupon, I was able to get it to print successfully. Went to self checkout and scanned 2 x $200 Visa GCs. Before swiping my CC I put in a small amount of change (I do this to randomize the CC charge). To my surprise the coupon spit out as soon as I deposited the change. So I hit cancel and only bought one of the $200s before swiping my CC. It struck me that next time I could test with no risk to see if buying 3 x $200 spits out 2 coupons or just 1.

Interested to know about the 3 x 200s.

Are the Visa fixed GC 200s earning fuel points?

Nope, no fuel points buying the $200s.

May not be as great a deal as buying VGC, but I'm still loving it, making $2 per $300 GC and free loads to BB (on top of CC bonus). Better than $3.95/$4.95 fee per $500 for loading VR or Vanilla GC.

If you 'always' shop at Vons, perhaps so. They're not really the least expensive out there for most things... only on certain items when there's some Just4U stacking with a managers special -- nothing really predictable.

At any rate, not really getting excited about this, especially since I still haven't seen any of the Vons I go to sell the $200 cards. I instead just bought my ReloadIt's for T-Mobile... (and quickly paid a bill).

HikerT... did you try out the $600 experiment? If it worked, I might actually put out the effort to find those $200 cards.

I tested it tonight. Scanned 3 x $200 Visa GCs at self checkout, but only one coupon printed out.

The best way to maximize this deal is to buy a $200 and $50 GC, you will pay around $10.90 in fees ($6.95 for 200 and 4.95 for 50), so you end up making a profit of 1.6%. Added to a 2% CB CC, that's around 3.6%, not to shabby, if you shop "smartly" at Safeway.

Easy to load the $200 to BB and $50 using AP or Evolve.

Expect Safeway to become a lot stingier in general now that Cerberus owns it...

How much stingier could they get? Officially you can't buy variable Visa/MC with a CC. All that's left is for them to hard code. Kroger is around every other corner so would not be a huge loss.

Isn't Kroger part of the Safeway/Von's family?

No, but there is a chance Kroger could buy them: http://www.dailyfinance.com/2014/03/...g-for-safeway/

i don't have anybody i can pay with evolve and, as far as i know, about the only way to get on amazon's radar for shutdown is always changing your payment by using debit cards. i do not recommend an army of $50 cards for AP.

further, using debit cards to do spend that could be done on a cc WITH points, is not efficient. sure. if you're using a 5% card and have nowhere else to liquidate- but there is always someplace to liquidate that doesn't gut other cc spend. well, except very small denomination cards like $50. they can be done, but too time/gas/energy/patience consuming. there's also a limit to how many reasonable prices you can find at safeway to get the full value out of the coupons- which expire in 2 weeks. i find the better deals are usually on junk food. i ate horribly when i was struggling to spend all those $10 coupons multiple times last year!

i try to draw the line at $200's, but will do $100's if there are no $200's (recent OM deal) or if the math gets terrible doing 200's.

If you read the AP thread, you'd know that no one has really determined what causes a shutdown. Two people can literally have the same set up and process, and one gets shut down and the other doesn't.

And, certainly, I doubt that running cards through your AP account, by itself, is a problem. Particularly since I've been doing it since the beginning.
