No the other poster was incorrect. You have to have them split tender for the amex gift cards, it will not auto drain. I know, because I tried it two days ago and it denied the purchase. If you run into a cashier that doesnt know how to do it, ask if they can call over a manager to assist. Both cashiers that I did it with yesterday did not know the policy or how to do it, called over the manager, the manager showed them how, said it was allowed, and went on their way. Worst case scenario the manager ALSO says no and you walk out empty handed.
It may also be that they initially tried running it for something other than credit?? It's definitely possible they didn't know what GC code as. |

I've never had this problem either. It may be that that CVS employees was new or did not know the procedure to use multiple tenders?? I assume once they were taught by the manager, all went well for future transactions??

CVS now $1k/day?
Amex just emailed offering/asking if I want to increase my credit now that I hit 70% of my CL. Not sure if that makes it more or less likely to get hit with an FR. Anyone have an idea?
Edit: Sorry, wrong thread. |
Ideally you shouldn't go above 30-50% of your available credit on a particular card, but if they offered...heck...why not? Does it come with an additional hard pull, I wonder?

No the other poster was incorrect, at least with regards to the OM $100 amex cards (I have not tried other denoms). You have to have them split tender for the amex gift cards, it will not auto drain. It's possible it's just the cards YOU are using. |

Thanks, but I'm obviously NOT incorrect if I, and others have been having no problems simply swiping, draining, and paying the remainder. Further I KNOW I am correct because I do it at least once a week.

Just went to another CVS with the 3x100 AMEX GC. Bought 1 VR, swiped the first AMEXGC, it knew it was only $100, went through all 3 of them no issues, without having the cashier to explicitly "split tender". Paid the remaining 203.95 with my regular card.
This proves they do use all remaining funds on the cards. I used a total of 4 methods of payment, so i could not test the 7 payment limit. |

My data point supports golf7's experience. Large denomination card, swiped and it all went away and reported remaining balance on POS terminal.

Interesting. Just went to a 4th CVS and tried again, this time without telling the cashier anything. Tried credit, gift card, and debit and none of them worked. What are you running them as? This time the cashier didnt know how to split tender so I walked out empty handed but it was on my way home so not out of the way.

My cashier runs them as credit. So same format as paying with CC--enters last four numbers, I sign, etc.
