No the other poster was incorrect. You have to have them split tender for the amex gift cards, it will not auto drain. I know, because I tried it two days ago and it denied the purchase. If you run into a cashier that doesnt know how to do it, ask if they can call over a manager to assist. Both cashiers that I did it with yesterday did not know the policy or how to do it, called over the manager, the manager showed them how, said it was allowed, and went on their way. Worst case scenario the manager ALSO says no and you walk out empty handed.

I've never had this problem either. It may be that that CVS employees were new or did not know the procedure to use multiple tenders?? I assume once they were taught by the manager, all went well for future transactions??

It may also be that they initially tried running it for something other than credit?? It's definitely possible they didn't know what GC code as.

Yea, once the manager showed them how it was smooth sailing. Did 20x$100 for 4x$496.05 cards without an issue. Two different stores, two different cashiers, both had to call a manager to figure it out but both managers knew how and quickly ran things through.

CVS now $1k/day?

Amex just emailed offering/asking if I want to increase my credit now that I hit 70% of my CL. Not sure if that makes it more or less likely to get hit with an FR. Anyone have an idea?

Edit: Sorry, wrong thread.

WhateverDude Dec 17, 2013 10:49 am

Ideally you shouldn't go above 30-50% of your available credit on a particular card, but if they offered...heck...why not? Does it come with an additional hard pull, I wonder?

Why is this in the CVS now 1K/day forum?

Oops, you're right. Brain stopped working, my mistake. Was using the Amex at CVS, but I'll move this when I sit down.

Thanks, but I'm obviously NOT incorrect if I, and others have been having no problems simply swiping, draining, and paying the remainder. Further I KNOW I am correct because I do it at least once a week.

It's possible it's just the cards YOU are using.

Since the person you responded to asked specifcally about the OM $100 amex, and those are the cards I am using, then you would be wrong with respect to their case....unless you experience this every week with OM $100 cards?

Just went to another CVS with the 3x100 AMEX GC. Bought 1 VR, swiped the first AMEXGC, it knew it was only $100, went through all 3 of them no issues, without having the cashier to explicitly "split tender". Paid the remaining 203.95 with my regular card.

This proves they do use all remaining funds on the cards. I used a total of 4 methods of payment, so i could not test the 7 payment limit.

Possibly a regional/store coding at the register then? I did it with three different cashiers at three different CVSs, and it didnt go through that way. Very weird.

My data point supports golf7's experience. Large denomination card, swiped and it all went away and reported remaining balance on POS terminal.

Interesting. Just went to a 4th CVS and tried again, this time without telling the cashier anything. Tried credit, gift card, and debit and none of them worked. What are you running them as? This time the cashier didnt know how to split tender so I walked out empty handed but it was on my way home so not out of the way.

If I could give any tips it's that you do NOT want to test the seven payment limit. This is nationwide and if you test it you will be required to wait the 1.5+ weeks for the money to be returned to the card. There is always a chance the money will not return on the card and after even inquiring about the wait process on my seven cards, I would hate to actually get to the point where the money didn't get back to the cards. I received so many questions about my "high purchases at a pharmacy" so I couldn't imagine trying to prove (via 1 void receipt) that I never used the money and why I was using the GC at CVS. And PS, the inquiring was over 1-$500 card--they did not know there were six others used in that same transaction. ;)

I'm just saying... Best not to test it.

My cashier runs them as credit. So same format as paying with CC--enters last four numbers, I sign, etc.

well thats just strange then. Cant think of why it would work for others and not for me, at 4 different CVSs except for the type of card, but others said they used the $100 AMEX from OM sooo Im at a loss.
