I'm guessing your odds of getting an answer to that local of a question are slim. Why not try the phonebook? Also, I've had times where I stopped in at a CVS and they had none and an employee offered to call other CVS's in the area to check for me. If I'm not in a rush and the store's not busy, I'll say yes. Also, they'll inevitably tell you when the next order is coming in, if you ask. But be warned that they're usually assuming VR if out of stock will be in the order, when sometimes often it is not. I suspect this is because they may have a plentiful stock when the manager is putting together the order, and a plentiful stock can disppear in a matter of minutes or a couple of back-to-back days if you get two or three people using their 5k/day limits.

This is the first I've heard about a weekly limit. I'm going to hold out that it is specific to your store, unless/until reports start coming in from others elsewhere.

I usually make my purchases at the front checkout where they know me well but last night I had to pick up a prescription so I brought my $5k to the pharmacy desk. The 40 something African American lady at the pharmacy asks me how much I want on each and when I say $500 she says loudly so her co-workers can hear: "Mr. Raptor, can you be my daddy?"
Had to laugh but was also extra careful walking out to the car since it got the attention of half the store. |

I have the best CVS manager ever. I did my first ever $50 VR purchase today. The store manager was next to my cashier and so when the transaction was complete the cashier showed him the screen and said he uses ID and CC to pay. His response? "Well as long as he's paying his CC I don't care." I nearly cried with joy.

Be sure to check out the whole gift card rack. There's a scumbag up in the DFW metroplex that's been hiding VRs behind other cards and I usually have to scan through a couple other racks to find a few. I'm sure there's others in other cities too.

After the Boston area being depleted for weeks, just walked into VR heaven with over 100 cards out on the rack. Jackpot! Time to churn the 100k AA offer!

A follow up to my post #4123 this morning. I just returned from the same store as last night and had the same issue with the charge being denied by their POS. The cashier said she is used to selling them with cc's all of the time so she was confused as well. I decided to drive to the next store about 15 minutes away and picked up 2x for $1k (gal said I was lucky to get them....) with absolutely no problem on the same card. I think this could be an instance of a computer being hard coded against vr's in a particular store perhaps?? Hopefully it's just an isolated incident, and maybe it's well known (I'm new to the MS angle), but I thought I would pass along my experience in case anyone finds it useful.

with CVs announcement yesterday that it will no longer sell cigarettes etc that will mean less in rev, I just don't see them curtailing VRs and GCs sales yet, at this time completely. They may implement some curbs but not altogether getting rid of them, as that will wipe their rev stream down too much (that's assuming they are making $$ on these items)

Last evening, having just received my new AA card I went and picked up a VR and my credit card didn't go through. The cashier said it needed a pin or a different form of payment. She also said that she sold others last night as well WITH a credit card. Fast forward to this morning, I received a fraud alert text from citi telling me to respond to whether or not it was me purchasing last night. I said that it was. My question is: Is this a normal occurrence for the first big purchase using this card OR do I need a PIN code of some kind OR is the store's POS machine not allowing credit cards for VR and the cashier was mistaken? Would appreciate some expert advice. This is my first go around with VRs.
Hopefully, you'll be "training" your Citi card when buying these VRs so that it knows to go through. Keep a cool head. Enjoy VRing! Ruhr |
Interesting points you guys make. I didn't make any calls or get any alerts between my second failed attempt this morning at one location and the second location at which I was successful. Maybe that first POS just remembered me and auto denied it without checking with citi as was pointed out above. For the record, the cashier did try two times and she was used to processing these. Who knows, if I need to buy more of these I know which store will work! It's certainly been a lot more hassle than I thought it would be though and if I'm not trying to meet a 10K spend I think I'd be done with it. However, I'd be lying if I said it wasn't somewhat fun to put this in practice and see what all the fuss is about on the FT threads, blog posts, etc.
