Yes, I guess that would be one drawback, that it requires a trip to Walmart. I guess I forgot that this can be an inconvenience for some, since I have a Walmart with a self-serve money center kiosk 2 minutes from where I work.

Are people aware that the One Vanilla Visa gift cards are also typically available at CVS? These load to BB just as easily as Vanilla Reloads and can be bought for up to $500, albeit with a $1 higher fee. I tried to purchase a Vanilla Reload locally and they said no, cash only. I came back with a One Vanilla instead and went home a happy customer.

I personally save the inconvenience of One Vanilla's for when Freedom has 5x on gas stations because they can nearly be found at any gas station and they always take credit for them. :)

Don't the one Vanillas require a trip to Walmart? VRs can just be done on the VR website.

can be used for MO at Walmart when I am done with 5k limit for BB?

Is there a thread about MOs at Walmart?

Thats true only if a person is loading their BB or Serve with them. If like me you load other DCs then youd be heading to Wally anyway.

Then what do you do once you are done feeding your birds for the month, either take a vacation or hello Wally

Then some folks dont load their AMEXs at all with VRs

Just bought $ 3000 of Vanilla Prepaid Reload cards over two days in PA. No questions asked...did not push it for more.

My question was in 2 folds

1) why is gift card business money maker for CVS now? (I knew but most believed it to be a loss leader)

2) Is momentum of 'Manufactured Spending' slowing down? (imho)

I think cvs is capitalizing on the general gift card market. They want a share of this:

The gift card business has grown in recent years, with the National Retail Federation predicting $29.8 billion was likely to be spent on the cards this Christmas season. While a convenient option, many gift cards - to the tune of nearly $2 billion - will go unused.

CVS now $1k/day?

My data point from LA: There were plenty of cards and between DW and I got 16k worth of cards. We did it in 1 day (2 cvs, 2 trips in the morning and evening). Each trip got us 4000 at each shop. They did the DL scan but register allowed it. I am done for the month (need to feed 3 birds)

easy as pie transaction today. another month another 5k at cvs to feed the birds. was expecting the new chase card to hiccup but it did not. good start to the year with a 1k purchase that will be refunded by work too. amazon payments done for the month as well.

I wonder how it went through on your second visit on the same day. I bought 5k in the morning at one location, and tried to buy another 2k at another within an hour. The register wouldn't allow it. Went to 2 different locations and bought $500x4 so they wouldn't have to scan the DL. Hm, this is gonna require more leg work.

Buy 2 at a time - 1 for $499, the other for $500. Save yourself half the trips. [

ahhhh. <$1000 won't trigger the DL scan huh? great tip! but, I just like keeping round numbers. even MOs, I always buy $1000 and pay the fee in cash. ty!

WhateverDude Jan 1, 2014 1:58 pm

Consistently using the same round numbers should be avoided.

I had posted last month that the CVS stores in Bucks County, Pennsylvania were running extremely low or completely out of stock of VRs. I'm happy to report that they're now both fully stocked with the new type, and there was no issue buying with a card. So if your local CVS has been out of stock it pays to check again as they were likely in the process of the switchover.

There were some new cashiers though compared to two months ago that I had to guide through the purchase process. :D

With the card fees it's not a round number, and there's always the price of a candy bar to add if you're hungry. At the deposit end, I doubt the banks care if you give them a $1000 or $1015 MO.

But sure, if you're worried about that sort of stuff, avoid it for your own peace of mind.

I was hit with a new cashier this week. Did my thing, scanned DL, and all that good stuff. His response to my bird feed? "If you would have added another VR, it would have been my largest transaction ever."

That brought a bit of joy to my world.
