“Luxury is becoming luxury again,” he said. “I say we’re entering a luxury Renaissance.”

Amanyara is a good deal!
Received an email today that Amanyara is throwing in free meals for stays of four nights. I never really looked into this property before and not sure if the $1500 rates for the pavilions are normal and these are truly free perks, or if they increased the costs of the pavilions to account for this.

Kagehitokiri - I doubt we are entering a luxury renaissance when any person or business who got things like TARP funds is hauled before Congress to atone for his spending sins. Makes for some good bargains for us discretionary leisure travelers - but I find the whole situation really sad. Robyn

...94% of those surveyed defined luxury as “for oneself,” rather than for the masses (2.8%). That marks a big change from last year, when 37% agreed that luxury should also be for the masses...
...92% said they feel no guilt over luxury spending today...And 73% said a true luxury brand is a reward for being elite...
...the fall of the so-called mass affluent or “trading up” crowd could returns luxury its roots — selling super-crafted, little-known status to a select few...
...Fully 82% said they plan to make fewer purchases, but 72% said they plan to make “more upscale” purchases...

New offer at FS New York. $200 credit per night to be used against any charge in the hotel (including your room). No expiration date as of today. Guess this is a way of reducing rates without appearing to reduce rates. Robyn

I agree it is a sneaky way to reduce the rates without actually lowering them.

Yup, plenty of five stars although rarely what you would call 'names', so in London you might get the Carlton Tower rather than the MO or the Sofitel St James rather than Claridges. However, if you look at the FT forum dedicated to bidding sites you'll find that you can usually guarantee which hotel you'll get by clever bidding.

Yes, they do but you won't get a FS, RC or MO. Also, www.hotwire.com is useful for 5-star hotels. I got Fairmont Scottsdale for $89 late March. www.betterbidding.com can be used to predict (sometimes with 100% accuracy) the hotel you are bidding for.
But the main drawback is you can't even pick the type of room (e.g. King as opposed to 2 doubles) and it is obviously for the lowest room category only. Some people then upgrade directly in negotiation with the hotel, but their are no guarantees.
