Agree re: Amstel.

Also, much more into the Waldorf Astoria of late over the Conservatorium.

Also, worth noting that the 2 Michelin star restaurant at the Waldorf Astoria is closed for summer.

I'm not sure what's the confusion it all about, but this particular suites sound pretty good and they look refreshed/modern/high quality...to me, at least.

Canal House Suites at the Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam

CANAL HOUSE SUITE WITH PRIVATE ENTRANCE ON CANAL SIDE
- 1 King Size Bed - Butler Service -[incl. breakfast]

From 699 ft2 Max : x 3 people

65 SQM / 700 SQF, enjoy the historic ambiance of staying in a canal house suite with a private entrance, overlooking the picturesque canal, butler service, Sofitel MyBed, complimentary WIFI and Nespresso facilities, climate control, HD TV.

Pricing within the next 3 weeks 800E p/n. This might be good overall value.

Their restaurant sounds good too IMHO incl. the following description at the Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam:

At Restaurant Bridges, it's all about fish. Chef de Cuisine Bobby Rust serves modern and trendy dishes. Within a few months of opening, Bridges was heralded as one of the best restaurants in Holland.
The private entrance canal side sounds very unique, as does the hotel with a grand heritage, but it remains fascinatingly modern at the same time.

They also offer Duplex suites.

Cheers & Safe Travels.

do any other rooms/suites at The Grand have butler service?

private entrance is interesting - to suite itself ? (wow) or 11-suite section ?

Not all 11 suites offer individual canal side entrances IMHO. A few select offer this, they can be booked/seen at their website.

The individual entrances look like these, see the attachments...web photos.

Description title: Canal House Suite Private Entrance, Butler Service, Canal View

On another note...has anyone in this forum more info about this fascinating address/hotel:

http://breitnerhouse.nl/

Would be interesting to know.

From their website, sounds promising and inviting:

Creating an elegant and refined boutique hotel in the centre of Amsterdam, they transformed part of their house into two beautiful suites, reflecting the romantic atmosphere of the historical city. Here, guests enjoy the lavish treatment the owners have to offer, including a luxurious champagne breakfast in the classic diningroom with a view on the park that has inspired so many artists throughout time. A stay at the Breitner House is the unique opportunity to experience the splendour of Amsterdam whilst enjoying the treatment of one of its best hotels.
Cheers & Safe Travels. ^

Service is on par with what we call luxury on this forum but that's to be expected with the price they charge and the size of the hotel (close to a hundred rooms so you won't find any large scale convention bothering patrons). It's close to a "boutique" feel and they remember you. They've done wonders when it comes to small touches (ex : the front desk opening without asking anything the terrace of one of the banquet rooms at 4 in the morning in order to enjoy with a friend the canal and them delivering room service there which remains a good memory up to today
anyone experienced similar service at De L'Europe recently ?

Staying at de L'Europe this May. Initially I was a little concerned because I had never heard of it, and booked it only because it has rooms with balconies, but reviews here seem like it is a good choice after all.

First time in Amsterdam for 3 nights in August. Consensus seems to be the Conservatorium, correct? Just wanted to make sure this is a good option for first-timers in summer.
