Japan - Prepaid Data SIM Wikia

1) get a SIM before the trip, activate it when you land. you can find japan-specific prepaid SIMs on ebay/amazon/... .Some countries have providers that offer good roaming rates in other countries(eg Starhub in Singapore, Ais Sim2Fly available globally)
2) preorder it, delivered to your hotel
3) preorder it to airport post office, can pick up when you land
4) preorder it, pickup at some airport counter/store
5) at airport/city, find an store/kiosk/vending machine and buy from them
6) Use an app such as Iijmio, Airalo or Ubigi to buy an e-SIM if your phone supports it

If you are arriving at Haneda international terminal without a SIM: Exit customs, turn right, and continue to the BIC camera store on the left side. Ignore any other places and vending machines that will sell you a SIM. BIC has a good selection at regular camera store prices.

Better 4G support with Softbank?

Perhaps this is the engineer in me being particular, but I noticed that my Galaxy S8 only works with 1 of 5 NTT 4G frequencies, whereas it works with 3 of 4 Softbank 4G frequencies. I expect Softbank supports more of the frequency bands used by US phones.

Should I go to a Bic camera store and ask for the cheapest sim that runs on Softbank, avoiding NTT?

Order one of the roaming sims off Amazon JP, then you can switch between Softbank and NTT Docomo and see which works best for you.

AIS SIM2Fly works well. If you don't have an address in Japan you can have it delivered to a convenience store for collection when you arrive.

A friend and I will both be arriving into Narita Terminal 1 on different flights (she will be there 4 hours before me). I intend to pre-purchase at klook.com SIM cards for us to pick up at T1 South Wing arrivals hall (QL Liner counter, Sakura Mobile). During the online purchasing it asks for my name, phone number, flight number and payment details. If I do two separate purchases then can I input in my friends name, phone number flight number etc and my payment details and then forward to her the confirmation email so that she can get her SIM card installed, activated and checked before I arrive?

Also, I have told my friend to go to the Airport Mall on Level 4 as there are cafes etc. for her to use whilst waiting for me to arrive. Are there any comfortable seating areas to use for the 4 hours? If waiting an a cafe or restaurant then she will need to be buying food and drink rather than just relaxing, using the internet and waiting somewhere. I have looked on the airprt website map but I am not seeing anywhere.

Thanks

Have you considered posting in the Japan forum for an answer to your questions about NRT?

My first question was about if it was possible for me to buy a SIM card for my friend to collect at Nartia airport, before I arrrive because her flight lands about 4 hours before mine. I wanted to know if I can buy at www.klook.com with her name, phone number, flight number etc. when I make the online purchase. I can then send her the email confirmation before she travels for her to print out and give to the QL Liner counter Sakura Mobile person in exchange of the SIM card.

My second question was is there any comfortbale seating areas in Narita Aiprot Mall for her to wait (besides the cafes and restaurants). She'll first pick up the SIM card and then wait for me to arrive before we both go to our Tokyo hotel.

Thanks

I did a post quote instead of quick reply. I was adding on to my previous post.

Apparently, I was not specific enough in my first response, so I will try again:

You have solicited questions about comfortable seating areas in Narita in a SIM CARD thread that is not specific to Narita. I was trying to advise you that there might be better places for getting this information, like:

Creating a specific thread in this forum:
https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/japan-509/

Or, using this thread:
Narita Int'l. Airport (NRT) Layover & Hotel Master Thread

I really have no investment in where you get your help. Just trying to lead you to other resources besides a SIM forum.

Not sure if posted already. Sim2fly now has a 6gb/10 day option. 349THB for Asia.

As far as I know all tourist data SIMs from Japanese MVNOs run on NTT Docomo.

Most tourist sims run on Docomo, not all. Softbank https://www.softbank-rental.jp/en/prepaid/ Gigsky offers Au https://www.gigsky.com/gigsky-for-ip...ular/#coverage, though that is more a roaming offer like Sim2Fly

They have data passes for tmobile like 10 days for $35. Then they have a global plus 15gb for $50.
They said using phone to call usa number is normally $.25/min but free.
Then using mobile phone to call japanese cell phone is usually $3/minute. They said it is free.
Isn't that a good deal?

15GB over 30 days for $50 non-throttled is a good deal for Japan if you need that much data or prefer the convenience. It might not be a good deal for places in the EU where data can be significantly less expensive, depending on how much of a hassle it is to purchase and activate a new sim.

Not all tourists going to Japan are from the US on T-Mobile. 10 days for $35 isn't a great deal (from non-Japanese prepaid MVNOs) if you don't need a lot of data. Sim2Fly is about $12 USD for 6GB non-throttled/10 days. Three HK esim is about $18 USD for 10 days in 90 day validity, 500 MB LTE and remainder throttled each day. Purely roaming esims are fairly affordable these days, too https://esimdb.com/japan

Japanese MVNO with tourist products are a little more expensive and all will deprioritize + throttle speeds. IIJMio used to offer decent service among the MVNO options and is sold at Bic/Yodobashi for those who want to walk into a store and get help from a human. Not everyone is great at sim swapping and top up services. 1.5GB about $20, 3 GB about $30 and can be recharged https://tr.iijmio.jp/

https://www.yodobashi.com/product/100000001005357528/
Bic

https://www.biccamera.com/bc/item/5974242/

Klook also offers some good sim card and hotspot rental deals. Those coming from certain airports in Asia can get some pretty decent deals
