Folks I just saw a link in rediff about cell phone number portability. Can't find it now, but its a good move. Indian cell phone industry is becoming better than the US. Free incoming calls, portability, plus use of CDMA (SIM cards?). Free incoming calls can't come quick enough here. I think the one adv in the US are the free phones.

How much grief would I get from IGI Customs for bringing in 2 laptops, they are both used, one for work, one for personal torrents ;)
If it matters traveling with my toddler. I know customs website says allowance is 1 laptop/pax over 18yrs age.

Anybody with experience in this regard?

DEL is the port of entry and I'm proud of my manhood..LOL We'll have at least 4 bags. Tried search but it didn't bring up anything, looks like time to hone up my searching skills on the forums :)

DEL is the easiest one - no probs there...

i always carry 2 laptops with me (one client and one personal).. i usually carry it in the same laptop bag but thts more for convience than anything else..for the client one i hv a letter from them stating its for official purposes and I have never had a problem in DEL or BOM or CCU ..

What about laptop & iPad? I've had that combo with me for a while now, and would be good to know what the official rule on that is...

IME, if u have something which u can prove to be of personal or official use , then its no problem.. Like u have 2 laptops, 1 Ipad, 1 Iphone, 1 digicam with searate lenses, even 2 wrist watches...This can be justified as all personal and I did not have problems till now with these..
But say, u being multiple of the above and they are all in the new packaging..hmm.. then u may be needing to pay customs duty etc..

IMHO, the Indian cell phone user has it much much better than US users.. India has the lowest call rates in the world , free incoming calls, very attractive post and prepaid packages available and quite good connectivity in majority of the country and now this MNP ^
In US , u hv signed contracts for specific periods and only then u get free phones but then ur monthly rentals are fixed at a higher price, incoming is charged mostly :eek: and users have quite less flexibility to change providers..

FWIW I was stopped in Sep by this Custom guy, who said Ipad is not a personal computer and I need to pay duty. I said Allright lets go get a recipt and asked for his ID as he was in plain clothes. Then all of sudden he got very friendly. I know how to stand firm when I'm not treading on water. Both of these laptops are used so I guess I'm OK.

Not if you know how to play the system right, I pay like $45 all inclusive for 500 anytime, mobile to mobile free, unlimited web and data, 3 landlines # free. This also includes that stupid 4G surcharge of 10 on my HTC EVO. In last 14 years I've paid for my phones twice, once when I started and then for EVO which is worth every penny :)

yes, but committment is usd 45 per month ..
what I am saying is US lags behind India in terms of flexibility, call charges and now mnp..a prepaid caller without any committment also enjoys quite low rates and hence the huge nos of mobile phone subscribers in india..
