Probably not surprised but definitely disgusted. Can you imagine the true potential of India, when it is sustaining growth of 8-9% despite all this corruption and rampant nepotism.

+1..

What is wrong?

it's everywhere, from the top to the bottom., I for one do not want to encourage it and have done my share of standing in Queue for the whole day to apply for my first passport (Did not want to pay SERVICE CHARGES to the agent) to spending 2 days to get a IDP (INR 150 vs INR 2000 thru the Agent).

One thing is the govt offices are purposefully complex to ward of any one who want to get it done without the middle man and the Govt employees thinking that serving a citizen is something above and beyond their Job description and they deserve a reward.

The recent encounter is the Police man at my home airport who wanted some New Year GIFT, when I flew in from SIN. I was carrying some electronics and within the customs limit. The First officer asked me to meet the Office In-charge, to whom I showed the invoice of the things I was carrying and he waved me off to go. but the particular police man is very persistent and I was surprised that even with out any extra favor, he had the nerve to ask.

In my 21 years of living in India, and yearly visits since for the past 6 years, and through numerous conversations with friends, parents and relatives, I'm strongly of the opinion that Indians tend to increasingly focus a lot more on "what could be, if only..." line of thought, than actually focusing on "what is and how could that be fixed"

Unfortunately corruption is so built-in the framework.....I dont know how many generations it will take to eradicate it.

IMHO, the main problem India faces is the huge population and the high % of people living below the poverty line..
Analysts can say what they want about us having xx no of ppl below age 30, but unless those are properly educated and trained, it doesnt help..

Well this line of thinking/view is only the net result of too much helplessness they(common people) feel in relation to the problem/issues faced day to day. And corruption is so deep rooted that if someone tries to take a stand, he/she is branded as non-cooperative, hard headed, etc. Prime example of this is Kiran Bedi aka Crane Bedi in Delhi in 80's, her reward for being honest and not bowing to political pressure, a sweet transfer to NE states where she can remain in wilderness and not bother these Netas. How many times have you heard an agent/contractor say, "The new Sahib is not good because he doesn't take bribe", to get your file in , put in front out of turn.

On the other hand the wages of these gov officers are not suffice and where do they get the extra money, bribes.

There's not a single solution to this complex web of problems, but then we can't wash-off our hands either, saying this can't be fixed. We just have to start somewhere, just don't know where.

I disagree - customer service in India is abysmal! (Even *if* you have a customer rep, one that remains the same for longer than 3-6 months!)

Agreed - this is pretty obvious - unless you pony up the funds under the table...

yes....but voice clarity, rates, coverage, etc are all better here....the biggest problem in the US is not that they charge for incoming calls but they also charge for incoming messages....that is one of the stupidest things i have come across....
