I wouldn't be surprised if 12/10 is what my plat card ultimately says.

Aftermath of Hhonors devaluation (subtitled, "Did They Feel The Pain?"

We're approaching the one-year anniversary of Hilton's astoundingly unpopular total devaluation of its once-terrific Hhonors program. Many Fters (including me) vowed to status match and take our business elsewhere.

I did it. I matched to Starwood Platinum and became an IHG Ambassador. It was awkward at first; I knew the HH ropes, the deals, the website and certainly had my favorite hotels and I did miss all of that but stuck to my word and am happy again.

Sounds like many Fters vowed the same.

Does anyone think Hilton felt the backlash?

My HHonors has gone from strength to strength since the Devaluation.

I have:
  • Earned 4 "Free nights Anywhere" certs (Q3FN) of which I will shortly be using 3, saving €1050 (or 180,000 HHonors points),
  • gained 21,000 PC points and PC Gold status which have been used to save €180 and $100 in bookings.
So I am well ahead and still have a free night to use before the middle of next year. ^

FWIW, I will be BIB Diamond by the end of the year.

IMHO I do not think they felt so much pain because toghether with the devaluation they launched the best promos I can remember for many years. Some of them, like Q1/2010 and Q2/2010, were very tempting.
Apparently other chains had even better ones(Hyatt?) but depending where you travel, those can be worthless.

I wasn't a Diamond but a Gold and already SPG Plat.

Took all of my business to SPG and even stay in hotels other than Hilton in cities where no SPG hotel exists.

I haven't stayed in a Hilton for well over a year.

excellent for you^ Tough to leave the known, glad you had the guts to do so, I don't think most folks will leave (due to the unknown) but also due to the reason savoix mentions

While the % of FT HHonors members who switched may be far greater than the avg HHonors population, FT is a small % of the overall HHonors pop.

I was headed from 120 HH nights per year to about zero.

But just picked up a new client that offers an HGI very close to their facility, or a CY (by Marriott) a little further away.

I was not targeted for the HH Q4 free nights offer (one free night for 10 nights), but asked the Diamond Desk to enroll me, which they did.

So HH will get me to Diamond again this year purely because of the lucrative promotion from which they intended to exclude me (clearly, they are still up to the same slimy tricks).

So bottom line is that my HH loyalty and business is still way down--Marriott is getting the bulk of my business as I head towards lifetime Platinum (am at 888 nights).

If a company is feeling the pain, they usually do something about it. Perhaps the abundant promos are a reaction to lost business...perhaps they were preplanned. Needless to say, I'm sure that Hilton is keeping a close eye on HHonors Diamond members to see if it has affected premium customer behavior.

It's not entirely due to the devaluation, but I have been using my HHonors AMEX much less and staying at fewer hilton properties. by this time last year I had requalified for diamond. Now i'm not sure if I will make it this year.

For me, it was the combination of the devaluation AND the decision by HH to privilege AMEX card holders over those of us who actually stay at their properties. I've switched all my business to Hyatt [where as a Diamond, I've been treated *FAR* better than I was ever treated by HHonors] and SPG. No regrets whatsoever.

How did you earn 4 Q3FNs? I thought the limit for the Q1 2010 promo was three certs per member? Or is that with the later promos included?

Out of curiosity, I just checked the known places to which I will travel between now and 12-31-10. Only one SPG hotel conveniently located close to where I work. Looks like I will stick with the Hampton's and Garden Inns.

I just upgraded from Choice Hotels (located in industrial areas as well) and I am thoroughly satisfied with HH. Even if you get points with Choice, they are only usable at Comfort Suites or similar or worse, not a great perk. The up scale properties they offer are nearly impossible to book with points. HH has been good to me so far.
