Background
From time to time, AY will make the Y traveller an offer to upgrade. This thread lists when, how and and how much the upgrade is.

Selection process is unknown, but it is likely that neither fare class on original ticket nor tier status of traveller is a selection criteria, at least not to travellers advantage. From the reports made so far, both travellers with and without FF# in the reservation have gotten offers.

Offers are likely made only when Y is oversold or nearly full. Some travellers have reported declining offer and being upgraded for free later ("op-up").

Offers are fixed price offers, either in € or in AY+points. The latter kind is only valid for members of AY+, while €-offers are directed to all kind of travellers.

Offers are made either in mail or via text message and recipient has 72 hours to repspond. Some reports says this time is now shortened to 48 hours. Text message offers typically arrive close to departure and may not state a last time to reply.

Offers in text message can be replied to and upgrade is instantly processed. Offers in mail has occasionally not cleared (said to be "sold out" when accepting offer too late).

If offer is accepted and upgrade clears, new ticket is issued in F, so a confirmed upgrade with all perks of business class included. Mileage earning is according to original fare class however.

Development
In august 2015 AY announced a trial to let travellers bid for upgrades, initially on AY89 and AY90. It is likely that bidding will affect the number of fixed price offers.

The trial has been made permanent, and the bidding for upgrade has been extended to more longhaul routes.
The program has also led to a consolidation of upgrade options to one webpage
https://www.finnair.com/int/gb/upgrade-options
where you can upgrade by bidding, by using AY+ points or by accepting last minute cash offers. The latter ("Last minute" offers) are the same as have been discussed in this thread.. Finnair still pushes those offers via e-mail and text-message, but now also shows them on this webpage.

368 euros is a fairly good price. Anything below 400 is good in my books. In case they aren't overbooked, the price at the airport might be significantly higher.

From that perspective you're very right. Thanks for the suggestion. That 368eu offer nowhere they mentioned the deadline so I thought no hurry to decide. But yesterday I was shocked to see it was gone. However, after one day the offer again appeared, this time 377eu, which I took.

I found it quite stressing that I need to literally refresh the app/web tool every now and then, to check if any upgrade availability. I preferred the old day that they would give us email or SMS for upgrade notification if any.

HEL>JFK

Booked AA ticket on AY 5 Jan 9 2020. Business had 7 seats open according to EF seat map. Economy was half full. No upgrades available when calling support or their online options due to AA ticket. Airport desk was able to price me an upgrade at €500. Compared to other posts in forum seems a bit high. Asked pricing agent she said the pricing is set for the day and depends on how full economy is. Upgrade is cheaper when economy is more full.

Just checked for upgrade offers on the app for my LHR-HEL-BKK -trip, and the first leg gives this; I think this is the highest offer so far for LHR-HEL?

AMS-HEL next week for €61. Not a bad deal, but no. The return is €140. Absolute big NO.

Basically the only relevant extra would be the food. Which I’m having in the platinum wing upon arrival anyways, before connecting to my BKK flight.

it is definitely a good deal though. Cheapest I have seen so far on this route

A bit offtopic, but it's mildly infuriating that flying business as a plat doesn't give you another half an hour of free internets..

I guess I should read the topic title before posting

I thought this was the price of a Y ticket. And remembered you discussing high prices on AMS-HEL-KUO some time ago. Therefore, I was wondering what was wrong with these prices

And yeah, I wouldn't pay 60 euros for the upgrade, either. As a basic who needs to check a bag, it would be a nobrainer. As a Gold or Plat with lounge access and exit row seats, not so.
