A question on Emirates fare rule
A friend of mine has booked a round trip ticket from BKK to NCL which allows free changes within its valid period. There is a clause in the fare rule like this
His departure from BKK was on 24 June 2011. He wants to take the return flight from NCL on 24 June 2012 and add a stopover in DXB for three days before flying back to BKK. However, the EK agents on phone insisted that he must have arrived at BKK by 24 June 2012 because the validity of the ticket is just 12 months. Who is correct? I believe my friend is correct because the validity of the ticket should follow the fare rules.
For one thing, my friend does not want to leave a day earlier because of some family issues. That's why there is no room to compromise. Also, the fare rules allow adding stopover for a certain fee (which he will pay for sure).
Thanks for all advice. In addition, I would like to know if arguing with their headquarters in Dubai helps. Any experience?

The way I interpret the rules are as follows. Ticket is not valid after 24 June 2012, so in my view, you should be able to commence travel on 24 June ex NCL and go straight thru to BKK.
A 3-day stop over would only be permitted if you did this within the 12-month window.
While your friend may say there is no compromise on his/her part, don't be surprised if EK also say the same. And re your point about arguing with headquarters, knock yourself out...
(I don't think it is going to help...)
The last thing you would want is for your friend to get to the airport and discover that the ticket is no longer valid. Best advice is to travel within the 12-month window.

If he departed UK on 24 June, iirc, the latest date of departure from last stopover point must be within 1 year
What I cannot remember for certain is whether latest departure from last stopover point would have to be the 23rd of June or the 24th of June
either way, I cannot see him being permitted to stopover for 3 days in Dubai since , whether the last date is 23rd or 24th, the 1 year validity would limit this stopover

I am just curious about the words used.
Should the commencement of the "travel from turnaround" be the expected departure time of the flight from the destination, regardless of the possible stopovers or layovers afterwards?

I think you're complicating things, as the way I would interpret is that the ticket has 12-months validity. That means, your friends ticket is not valid after 24 June 2012. He would need to commence travel ex NCL on 24th June. If he wanted to stop-over in DXB as you mentioned, then my thoughts are that he would need to do this within the 12-month window. I could be wrong.

Looking at the fares on BKK-NCL-BKK on EF, the economy fares all seem to state
I have never seen turnaround point mentioned in max stay where stopovers are permitted
There are very few tickets which allow > 12 months validity and none of the normal public fares I have seen of EK have allowed it
I suggest that the friend may be interpreting the rules in a manner that appeals to him rather than stating the rules as published
Dave
Code:
TRAVEL FROM LAST INTERNATIONAL STOPOVER MUST COMMENCE NO LATER THAN 12 MONTHS AFTER DEPARTURE FROM FARE ORIGIN.
There are very few tickets which allow > 12 months validity and none of the normal public fares I have seen of EK have allowed it

The quoted clause is in exact wording in the fare rules, so there should be no self-interpretation problem.

On the EK eticket pdf, at the bottom is a Fare calculations section which has contents such as
9.41 EK SIN 2105.91FRTSG4 NUC3594.94END END ROE1.28
What is the content of that line? That will give the fare basis which may be checkable online to see what online tools report
Also on the eticket, for the sectors from NCL back to BKK, there is a column which states "COUPON VALIDITY" and has a date associated with each sector. What are the dates of validity for the remaining sectors
If he doesn't want to leave NCL earlier that should be ok but I doubt that the stopover will be permitted
Was the ticket purchased directly from Emirates?

But I wonder if he has an e-ticket because he paid for the ticket at an Emirates office. What he showed me about the fare rules was a hard copy. The quoted clause was typed word by word but not direct copy-and-paste from a PDF file.
Let me ask him anyway.

For the e-ticket PDF, I have to ask him for that tomorrow and check. Thanks for your information!

If you know the reservation number, you can go to emirates.com, access the booking using Manage a booking and then near the top in the "Passengers" box, there is a column "e-ticket Status" and if you click on "view/print" you will be able to view the eticket and get the details

Even if he paid for it at an office it will be (almost certainly) an electronic ticket

By the way, I have done some random searches on ITA. I see the exact maximum stay requirements for flights from MAN to HKG (Fare code: ULE1YGB1)!

Where more than one condition applies, it is the most restrictive that counts - i.e. likely to be ticket validity.

The EK agent is correct. The departure from the last stopover (for example in DXB) must commence by 23:59 12 months on. In this case your friend needs to depart the last stopover (as in more than 24 hours) point by 23 June 2012 (because this is a leap year).

Definitive Answer
Here's the definitive answer:
3.2.1(a) one year from the date of issue, if completely unused; or
3.2.1(b) one year from the date of first travel on the Ticket, but only if your first flight happened within one year of the date of issue of the Ticket.
