The way I interpret the rules are as follows. Ticket is not valid after 24 June 2012, so in my view, you should be able to commence travel on 24 June ex NCL and go straight thru to BKK.

A 3-day stop over would only be permitted if you did this within the 12-month window.

While your friend may say there is no compromise on his/her part, don't be surprised if EK also say the same. And re your point about arguing with headquarters, knock yourself out... (I don't think it is going to help...)

The last thing you would want is for your friend to get to the airport and discover that the ticket is no longer valid. Best advice is to travel within the 12-month window.
