I think you're complicating things, as the way I would interpret is that the ticket has 12-months validity. That means, your friends ticket is not valid after 24 June 2012. He would need to commence travel ex NCL on 24th June. If he wanted to stop-over in DXB as you mentioned, then my thoughts are that he would need to do this within the 12-month window. I could be wrong.
