A friend of mine has booked a round trip ticket from BKK to NCL which allows free changes within its valid period. There is a clause in the fare rule like this

His departure from BKK was on 24 June 2011. He wants to take the return flight from NCL on 24 June 2012 and add a stopover in DXB for three days before flying back to BKK. However, the EK agents on phone insisted that he must have arrived at BKK by 24 June 2012 because the validity of the ticket is just 12 months. Who is correct? I believe my friend is correct because the validity of the ticket should follow the fare rules.
For one thing, my friend does not want to leave a day earlier because of some family issues. That's why there is no room to compromise. Also, the fare rules allow adding stopover for a certain fee (which he will pay for sure).
Thanks for all advice. In addition, I would like to know if arguing with their headquarters in Dubai helps. Any experience?
