Well that is good enough for me. Every time I get together with my Dad, we go to a steakhouse.

This is one of my best memories as a kid, I guess I was sixteen at the time. I tagged along one of his trips to NY and he took me to a new steakhouse every night for a four days. We went to Sparks, The Palm, Peter Luger, and Smith & Wollensky (when there was just one or two). It was a few days of gluttony, but one is able to really form an opinion when they are done back to back.

Peter Luger was and is my favorite.

However, on my last trip to NYC. I went to Quality Meat which was good, and I loved the sides. The sides were quite imaginative . I thought that the creamed spinach yorkshire pudding was excellent.

I really enjoyed Lawry's in Chicago. Food and service were exceptional.

In NYC, I would definitely recommend Wolfgang's. ^^^ The best meat, full stop. Keen's is usually good, too, whereas Smith&Wollensky is ok-ish and often comes with waiters pushing you to order more than you really want

In the U.S. at least, I'm partial to the Chicago Chop House and Peter Luger. Frankly, I think Sparks in NY is over-rated on the food (however, the wine list is pretty phenomenal).

Best Steakhouse

Although it did not have a traditional beef texture, the Riserva ribeye at Carnevino in Las Vegas was amazing and I think everyone should try it at least once. It's unique.

Two of the best steakhouses

If you're in Portland, Oregon, (and hey, who wouldn't love to be?) and want a truly classic and classy experience then you must go to The Ringside on West Burside. Dark 1940's ambience, white linen, waiters in tuxes who know what service is about, and amazing steak. The onion rings are a must.

Another great place is in Williams, Arizona, west of Flagstaff on I-40. Pull off on old Route 66 and find Rod's Steakhouse. The most excellent prime rib dinner I've ever had at 3:30 in the afternoon. Crisp, cold salad. Fresh from the oven rolls (from scratch), and perfect prime rib, also with excellent onion rings. Old place. Has been there since the early or mid- 40's, I believe, with only 3 owners in that time. My grandfather used to go in there when he worked in that part of the country in the '40's. My Dad also has been a few times. I've been once and can't wait to go through there again.

I had a near immaculate Filet Mignon at The Steakhouse at Harrahs Resort Atlantic City, NJ. The biggest tip I ever gave to a waiter ever.

Man, I love me some good steak, but so far the best steak I've been able to get anywhere, is the one I cook for myself. I've heard about Luger, but never had a chance to stop by. I will try to put it in some compartment in my head to remember making a visit once I make a trip to NYC.

I made fresh cuts of steak on my mequite smoking grill last night, and it reinforced my opinion of my own is the best, but there are some other decent places out there.

Pappa John's?

Do you mean Pappas Brothers steakhouse? I've eaten there and it is quite good. The only Pappa John's is Papa Johns Pizza (that I know of), and I've had better pizza in my life!

Barclay Prime in Philly
Mastro's Beverly Hills
Pappa John's in Houston
Smith & Wollensky many locations
Capitol Grille in Boston and DC
The Prime Rib in Baltimore
Bone's in Atlanta
(Geez, I've eaten a lot of red meat in my life...)

These are the restaurants that I can remember off the top of my head. And out of all these, there is only one restaurant that hands down wins for me:

Mastro's City Hall Steakhouse in Scottsdale, AZ.

This, in my opinion, is better than the one in Beverly hills. The steaks are always just done perfectly, with the right amount of salt, perfect tempreature, and perfect texture. These are the best steaks I've ever eaten.

For me, the runner up is DelFrisco's. They have fabulous steaks also and are a close 2nd. But Mastro's City Hall (not the other Mastro's in Scottsdale) is just awesome.

Suggestion for this thread regarding wet and dry aged

Instead of asking for the best steakhouse, how about for the best dry aged and the best wet aged steakhouses? There is a flavor difference and some prefer one or the other. If you are a Mastro's and Del Frisco's fan, you obviously prefer wet aged. If you love Luger's or Carnevino then you are a dry advocate. Does this make more sense?

I live here and love the place, but it's a pain in the neck. Unless you have pull, reservations for between 6:00 and 9:00 on most nights must be made long in advance. No reservations for small parties. Place is chaotic. Service is delivered in a knowing, almost-brusque, bantering, kinda' wise-guy style; not rude, very New York and part of the tradition, but not everyone's cup of tea. Some choices besides steak, but they're mostly mediocre (except for the lamb chops, yum yum). Wine list only so-so. In an industrial area on the Brooklyn side of the Williamsburg Bridge (not the worst thing in the world, but another hurdle for out-of-towners). Others will disagree with me, but my take on this would be that unless you're going with a good-sized group that includes at least one or two savvy locals who eat there occasionally, I'd choose to go to one of the other places that others have mentioned in this post. YMMV.
