I live here and love the place, but it's a pain in the neck. Unless you have pull, reservations for between 6:00 and 9:00 on most nights must be made long in advance. No reservations for small parties. Place is chaotic. Service is delivered in a knowing, almost-brusque, bantering, kinda' wise-guy style; not rude, very New York and part of the tradition, but not everyone's cup of tea. Some choices besides steak, but they're mostly mediocre (except for the lamb chops, yum yum). Wine list only so-so. In an industrial area on the Brooklyn side of the Williamsburg Bridge (not the worst thing in the world, but another hurdle for out-of-towners). Others will disagree with me, but my take on this would be that unless you're going with a good-sized group that includes at least one or two savvy locals who eat there occasionally, I'd choose to go to one of the other places that others have mentioned in this post. YMMV.
