Minimum connection time at AMS
Note: when determining the airline for MCT purposes, what counts is who markets the flight, not who operates it.

Schengen Zone to Schengen Zone, KL-KL: 50 minutes

Schengen Zone to Schengen Zone, KL-DL, DL-KL, or DL-DL: 25 minutes

Schengen Zone to Non-Schengen Zone, KL-KL or KL-DL: 90 minutes

Schengen Zone to Non-Schengen Zone, DL-KL or DL-DL: 50 minutes

Non-Schengen Zone to Schengen Zone, KL-KL or DL-KL: 60 minutes

Non-Schengen Zone to Schengen Zone, KL-DL or DL-DL: 50 minutes

Non-Schengen Zone to Non-Schengen Zone, DL-DL, DL-KL, or KL-DL: 50 minutes

Non-Schengen Zone to Non-Schengen Zone, KL-KL: anywhere from 40 minutes to 2 hours--it depends on the flight numbers and the dates. I've posted the raw output below to help you figure out which MCT will apply.

Since DL only operates morning and noon/1pm flights, it's safe to say this is KLM metal.

I am confused by one thing. When I pull up information on the flight it shows two different callsigns. One KLM621 and one KLM255. When I pull up flight information it shows KLM621 operating as KLM255. However when I go to flightaware it shows both as different flights, with planned departure/arrival times of a few minutes apart.

Any clue what that is about?

It is KLM255 KL0621 (not KLM621)

Like other KL flights:
KLM47 KL0611 AMS-ORD
KLM213 KL0681 AMS-YVR
KLM53W KL1363 AMS-WAW
etcetera etcetera

One is the callsign the other is the flight number. Differing flight numbers and ATC call signs are to avoid having two flights with similar call signs in the area at the same time. Pretty common practise outside the US.

Doesn't explain why both the flight number and call sign show different times for departure/arrival.

My guess is that one is the published gate time and the other is anticipated wheels-up time (or perhaps the brake release time from the gate?).

Within 15-20 minutes you should have cleared passport control and Delta's PDC.
Grouchy : No Delta PDC, since it's KL metal to ATL. So, that makes it even easier. As a side note, I believe all Delta metal is "gone" by around 15:00'ish; and they close done the PDC areas.

+1, you should be fine CMK10. Flew AMS-ATL on a newly modified 777 a year+ ago... so, you should also be fine with regard to "new" WBC. (of course, I did not peak to make sure that flight segment is still the 777....)

Yep, it'll be on KLM.

Thanks for the advice from everyone, sadly I'll be in Comfort Plus but I imagine that even that is better than DL internationally.

Each his own, the KLM 777-200; 3-4-3 narrow seat config with a narrow aisle. The middle seat is terrible if the other two seats are taken by males also. No shoulder or armspace. If you have an aisle seat you getting hit by every single person and cart that walks by.
Add KLM last week's decision to remove one FA in economy in the near future and you have a hard time convincing me that it's better than Delta's Airbus A330-300 Delta Comfort+ 2-4-2 flight

Following up on this. I arrived five minutes early into D63. Easy walk to passport control and I was allowed into the Short Connections line. Departure gate to ATL was E9 and I arrived just as boarding was starting. My bag also made the connection too. Certainly a better experience than flying through CDG on the way over.

I recently flew FCO-AMS-NCL.
outbound from FCO was delayed due to bad weather in FCO.
Touchdown in AMS was 16:03, next flight departure time was 16:25. crew said on plane that io would not make the connection, but i tried. We arrived at gate d47 i think, i ran and ran, went to passport shot connection line, then to my gate d43 i think, bit was then 16:23, and gate already closed.

(they put me on flight to MME instead.)

Transit TXL-AMS-DEL

I will have a transit in February 2017 (Thursday) between a Schengen flight (from TXL) arriving at 11:35 (C gates) and an outbound non-Schengen flight (to Delhi) departing at 12:45 (KL871; F gates). Currently, KL 871 usually is scheduled to depart at 12:35, but the flight history I found online says that it is mostly delayed.

I wonder if that will be enough. I have read reviews on the internet that worry me. Some months ago, utter chaos seemed to be the usual state. If I understand correctly, I will not pass through security (coming from a "clean" airport). But I will have to go through passport control.

First of all, deplaning can be sped up by chosing a seat somewhere in the fron of the aircraft. But how about walking/running to passport control?

I heard that LH passengers (incl. eco) in MUC with a short connection (they take pride in enabling very swift transfers, which I can confirm from my experience in 2015) can avail of a special shuttle service that will bring them directly to the plane in a bus, incl. immigration proceedings. Do KLM/AMS offer that, too? Will passengers in a hurry be transported with electric buggies? Will airline staff pick them up and facilitate their transfer? I saw that concerning arriving passengers on a TXL-FRA flight with an ongoing itinerary in Europe (cannot recall the exact destination).

I know there is a payable "meet & assist" service and "KLM Cares" for the disabled. I am really worried I might get stuck in the passport controls with staff being reputed as uncooperative/ignorant.

Since the doors of intercontinental flights close 15 minutes prior to departure and TXL-AMS flights are delayed from time to time, the actual time slot is shorter than 1 h 10 mins.

As a last resort, I might show up at TXL for the 6 am TXL-AMS flight and ask to be rebooked (then with a 5 h layover in AMS), I got an ad-hoc rebooking of domestic LH flights and it worked perfectly. Do KLM allow that as well or do they charge?

AMS is one of the easiest and quickest airports to transit. Even with passport control you should make the flight.

as for rebooking KLM isn't going to rebook you unless there's a delay. There especially not going to put you on OAL, unless they're at risk of needing to pay EU261 compensation.

AMS passport control does track close-departure flights, and if your flight # is on an info screen in the queueing area, you can move to a dedicated line that should get you thru a bit quicker. Passport Control can look like a mess when you first arrive at the scrum, but it seems to move reasonably quickly.

In early Sept AMS had automated kiosks for most EU passports (and they eventually let chip-enabled US people to use it too). On the day in Oct that I made the same transit, the automated system was unavailable, so they had more manual lanes open.

This is now standard operating procedure -- chip-enabled USA passports using the automated stations -- in addition to other countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and others that I can't remember off the top of my head.

In the very near future AMS will introduce RTP-NL (Registered Traveller Program Nederland).
If you are a Dutch national or a citizen over 18 years from the United States, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore or South Korea you can use the automated border passage at every arrival filter @Schiphol.
This requires a one-time, free registration. The KMar will setup registration desks before and after passport control. It will take like 5-10 minutes and consist of a passport check and an automatic background check. The RTP-NL membership is linked to the validity of the holders passport.

Mrs. ND76 and I flew 12/19/16 BUD-AMS on KLM, arriving at gate B21 around 0845, arrived at Crown Lounge 52 shortly after 0900. KLM no longer deplanes you on the upper level of the concourse (which is a sterile hallway leading to passport exit control), allowing you instead to walk in the main B concourse until you reach the Schengen zone barrier. We used the automated passport exit, where you insert your passport and get it scanned while the automated system takes your picture; then you are confronted by a man who stamps your passport while police watch him (and you).

The PDC agent who asks you the security questions at a stand outside the door to CR52 was unoccupied when we met with him, so that took less than 2 minutes for us.

It took close to 10 minutes to walk from CR52 to gate E18 to board the AMS-DTW flight. Because we met with the PDC agent at CR52, we bypassed the PDC at the left hand side of the entrance to the E concourse. There is no security checkpoint at the gate anymore.
