My (LoganFlyer's) guide to maximizing your bump chances on Delta:

https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/30484249-post1713.html

(The concise version:

1. Use the App to see if more people are looking for seats than there are seats available. As part of the Customer Commitment, gate agents, phone res agents, and tickets agents must tell you if a flight is overbooked if you ask. (They don't need to say by how many seats.)
2. Do everything you can to get on the volunteer list through OLCI or a kiosk at the airport, since some GAs use that list.
3. Talk to the GA as soon as the gate opens up--don't wait for them to make an announcement.
4. Don't be afraid to negotiate with the GA.)

Got home at 10 am this morning instead of 10 pm last night, well worth $2,000 in Amex gift cards.
Well played. What did they give you for a hotel?

$300 given for ATL>FLL on 10/20. Asked for 3 volunteers. Only needed 2. Next flight was less than an hour later.

$2000 Haneda - LAX right on Mon the 14th. Took 5 of us. People were trying to get back after the typhoon shut all of Saturday's flights down. I heard the next day would go even higher as more people were overbooked.

Brand new route for DL and already overselling, looks like a good add for them from BOS. Wonder how ORD and EWR are doing also.

This is the super rare 3-fer. Nice work. Guess you didn't have to be anywhere near DCA in a hurry

Apologies if this has been covered before- can’t seem to find the answer up thread.

ATL-SEA looks oversold today. But I’m on an outbound MR with immediate turn around at my destination and very limited flights SEA-x-SEA. If I volunteer, can the GA modify the return segments, or do i ditch the MR and makes my way home with cash in hand?

I'd say if/when the time comes, just explain your situation usually GAs are willing to work with you because they're happy you are volunteering. Typically it helps to have a few options already researched.

Even if they can't the diamond desk usually can. In that situation I'd say you'll want to move the return but offer to have the diamond desk do it.
