My (LoganFlyer's) guide to maximizing your bump chances on Delta:

https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/30484249-post1713.html

(The concise version:

1. Use the App to see if more people are looking for seats than there are seats available. As part of the Customer Commitment, gate agents, phone res agents, and tickets agents must tell you if a flight is overbooked if you ask. (They don't need to say by how many seats.)
2. Do everything you can to get on the volunteer list through OLCI or a kiosk at the airport, since some GAs use that list.
3. Talk to the GA as soon as the gate opens up--don't wait for them to make an announcement.
4. Don't be afraid to negotiate with the GA.)

Considering how seldom I get bumps, sure. (Or at least subject to SDC changes, or maybe SDS to earlier.)

I've gotten excited whenever I see my flight go sold out on DOD. Inevitably they don't ever even solicit volunteers at the gate. I'm always left feeling like a fool for approaching the gate agent and asking if they're going to need anyone. Heck, I even got out standby on a maxed out flight a couple weeks ago. RM must be getting great bonuses lately.

Underselling costs them revenue. Selling a Y ticket for $1300 and paying me $800 to take a later flight is a win for all parties.

I never feel like a fool. Most gate agents appreciate the check-in.

Flights are not nearly as oversold as they used to be, but that doesn't stop me from checking in with the GA's when I know the flight is zeroed out.

Bump from CDG to ATL

Flying from CDG-ATL on 9:30am flight, flight was oversold by 2 and GA asked for volunteers for 600.00 in AMEX gift cards, said I could take later flight 4.5 hrs later or they would put me in Sheraton for the night there at CDG and take same flight the next day. Told gate agent I would take later flight that day and could he put me in Premium Select. He did better, gave me Delta One, the gift cards and 36.00 in food/merchandise vouchers at RAVES.

Would have asked for D1 from the get-go, Premium select is not worth it for me if they stick me in a middle. Good to know they are offering the Amex GC on international flights now, I've only seen them at DL hubs domestically.

LAX - OGG today. Started with $800 offer + hotel to go tomorrow. Within 5 minutes, they increased the offer to $900 then $1,000 before two people decided it was worth it to cut their Memorial Day weekend vacation short.

According to friend, they were offering $3,000 ATL-LHR today. I guess the summer travel season has begun!

$1400, MSP-ICN. Offer was initially $1200 or less (I wasn’t around for the first offers, if any). Also 3 $15 vouchers and a hotel.

I even convinced them to reroute me on MSP-HND so I could avoid the connection in ICN altogether (booked on a separate ticket too!).

Friday's CWA-MSP was oversold last week Friday, and they needed one pax.
$600 Amazon card, my friend got it.
Once the flight left, he was the ONLY person in the terminal for a few hours!

You know, these little airport flights on DL's CRJ200 planes are very often oversold by 1 to 2. I know a guy that took VDB's every single week out of Midland, MI for 10 weeks, and had around $9000 in DL funny munny and cash cards. This is especially the case on Friday mornings from past experience.

Forgot to post this, DL1680 to SFO was oversold by 6 people. The final offer ended up being $1,200. We volunteered but needed to get to SFO sooner than they were able to get us there. We asked about Oakland, San Jose, Sacramento and even Fresno. The GA tried really hard to put us on one of those flights but couldn't. Oh well.

why couldn't they? ALL of those flights were sold out?

You could have asked them to rebook on OAL. Or increased the VDB amount and use the increase to just buy new tickets on another carrier of your choice.

Why would anyone select anything other than an AMEX gift card???

+1

Take the $$ and run.... and buy a 4K big-screen TV with it.... or spend it at some ultra-expensive restaurant.

If AMEX isn't offered, I would certainly take the Delta travel credit, as I have always have 5 trips that the Mrs. and I are planning.
