Had to fly SLC>PDX>SEA last week, and managed to lose my driver's license somewhere between the SLC PreCheck line and the SeaTac car rental center. (huge pain in the butt, by the way)

Got a postcard in the mail (at home) on Saturday from the Lost & Found dept at SLC letting me know that my license had been turned in, and asking me to call them to "claim my property".

Since I don't have any travel through SLC scheduled for at least a couple of weeks, I called them. They said that they would be happy to send it via USPS at no charge.

If they're going to send it through the mail, why didn't they save themselves the cost of a postcard and postage, and just go ahead and mail the stupid thing to me??? They would have saved money, and I could have maybe saved the time and expense of getting a replacement.

Not everyone updates their address as soon as they move. They probably didn't want to send it to that address and have you not be living there anymore. But sending you a post card and you calling them they can verify if it's you before sending it out...I"m sure DL can handle the $.49 extra to make sure your ID doesn't fall into the wrong hands

Then what purpose is served by sending a postcard to that address? I suggested to my wife that maybe they did it this way because of the possibility that I lost it while starting a trip, and would prefer that they send it to a hotel somewhere - but she said the same thing.... "If they send the postcard to the house, you wouldn't even know about it till you get home".

It was pretty much in the wrong hands as soon as it was out of my possession.

And don't misunderstand - losing it was totally my fault. I never expected to see it again, and applied for a replacement as soon as I got home. I would have been perfectly ok with them just cutting it up and discarding it. It just struck me as weird.

Better to send a postcard and never hear back, then just send the ID to a residence you don't live at anymore.

Sending a postcard has the advantages that there is some finite possibility that, if the addressee had moved, the post office would forward the card, or return to sender with either a forwarding address for indication of movement with no forwarding address.

And to avoid even the time a postcard is in transit, put a complete itinerary in one's bag with dates and hotel contact info. To identify my bag it has only my name and DL and AA FFNs, for security, and a note to look inside for the itinerary.

A random, pathetic complaint: The food at the ICN KAL lounge is really, really bad. I think this is a shame because I found the food in Seoul to be quite good overall.

Neither of these scenarios provide an advantage that a postcard would enjoy which wouldn't also apply to a first class envelope (with a driver's license inside).

I am not clear on what this has to do with anything. In my case, what I lost was just my driver's license. I am assuming (though I don't know for sure) that it fell out of my pocket somewhere after the PreCheck ID checker guy. It was turned in to the airport's lost and found. The airport mailed me a postcard. I am pretty sure that if I lost a bag at the airport, and it was turned into lost & found, they would still mail me a postcard

Maybe that's the clue. It is perhaps SOP for airport lost and found to mail a postcard anytime they can figure out an address (but not phone/email) for a lost item. There is a clear advantage to sending just a postcard if the lost item is an entire wallet, where they could get the address from a license but there might not be anything in there with a phone number. Or even a larger item like a stroller or suitcase.

I give up.

The irony that I am *clearly* doing a poor job expressing is that
  • They looked at my driver's license (which is a small card that would fit neatly inside of an envelope) to get my address
  • They wrote that address onto a postcard, along with a note that they had my driver's license
  • They mailed that postcard to me, with a request that I *call* them
  • When I call them, they say "We can just drop that in an envelope and mail it to you - no charge!"

But that's not ironic. There are good reasons not to just mail the license. E.g. perhaps you're still in town and will contact lost and found at the airport and pick it up in person. I get that you're mad that the lost and found people didn't read your mind and just do what you wanted them to do.

Was that necessary?

Here's my complaint of the day: Why on FC upgrades do they start with the worst seats (ie bulkhead) first? Being on the top of the list I am punished with a bad seat and those below me get the nice ones with leg room and storage. Perhaps not ALL people hate the bulkhead, but I bet its 80% +

Yes, because you keep saying we aren't understanding why you're mad. We do understand.

Show me where I once said that I was mad. I get that you're a contrarian, but don't put words in my mouth. And unless you convened a meeting, you probably aren't qualified to use the word "we" in that sentence. So if you're going to be rude, man up and speak for yourself.
