Delta rolls out schedule changes pretty much every Saturday, though the scope/impact can vary. During this time, seat maps may be locked out, may show the wrong aircraft layout, etc. while changes are occurring. If you are not traveling immediately, FT conventional wisdom is to wait until Sunday (or even Monday in the case of major schedule adjustments where things take longer) for things to settle down, then take stock of your upcoming itineraries to see what changes have occurred and what changes/refunds you may be entitled to.

You are entitled to a full refund to original form of payment, even for a ticket that was purchased as a non-refundable ticket, if any of the following occur as a result of schedule change:
  • departure or arrival delay of 2hrs or more
  • increase in the number of flight segments (non-stop to connecting, 1-stop to 2-stop, etc.)
  • change resulting in a connection below the Minimum Connection Time for a given airport (do a Google search for "site:flyertalk.com minimum connecting time XXX" with the airport code to find the relevant thread if one exists)
  • any change in operating carrier, i.e. operated by Delta mainline before the schedule change and Delta Connection after the change
    • it is also a commonly-held belief that a change from Delta Connection to mainline, or from one Delta Connection carrier to a different Delta Connection carrier, also qualifies for a full refund -- if anyone has documentation of this, a link would be great...

The airline would rather keep your money than refund it, so they will frequently accept any vaguely reasonable rerouting that you propose. This includes, by policy, changing origin and/or destination within 100 miles, rebooking +/- two days, and changing outbound/return date to keep the length of the trip the same post-rebooking.

If none of the above conditions for a refund is true, you may still be entitled to a free change -- in your trip summary there will be a notice about changes/refunds, and per the "conditions apply" popup link in that text:

If a Delta schedule or routing change has delayed your departure or arrival by more than one hour, you may be eligible to select an alternate flight at no additional charge. Note that the below conditions may apply:
  • Your origin, destination and travel date must remain the same
  • Alternate flights must be available, and you can only modify once as subsequent changes may result in additional fees
  • Voluntary changes to other flights not impacted by a Delta schedule change may result in additional fees
If possible, you may wish to try modifying your flights online first -- there have been data points where the site allowed a free rebooking even though it did not technically fall into the above categories. NOTE however that self-rebooking online is known not to work if you have (1) any trip involving upgrade certificates (whether cleared or not), (2) if you have self-upgraded by picking an upgraded seat that said FREE (instead of waiting for the automated upgrade system sweep to reseat you in an upgraded seat), this seems to inhibit self-rebooking as well.

Otherwise, suggested best practice is to research your preferred alternative rebooking beforehand (whether DL flight search, Google Flights, ITA Matrix etc.) so that you can speak with an agent already knowing what you want, and ask for it; this will be much more efficient than having an agent find alternatives for you.

Other notes/FAQs:
  • Even if you voluntarily choose a preferred rebooking, you have a high likelihood of success claiming Original Routing Credit since the original reason for the change was involuntary.
  • If you booked through a travel agency, including online travel agencies (OTA) such as Expedia, Chase Ultimate Rewards, etc. you will have to contact them, not Delta, to request rerouting if the automatic rebooking is not satisfactory to you.
    • There have been reports of an agency insisting that a change of 2 hours was required (per the "pro" site) for a free change, even though the popup on the DL site says 1 hour
    • You can sometimes get Delta to take over a travel agency ticket; this is subject to a $50 fee to take over the ticket, although sometimes agents decline to collect it

I received a change on Saturday that my return flight from Japan has been changed from a direct flight to now a connection through SeaTac.

We originally had 3 seats booked in Comfort + but I cant select seats on the new flights because they are all full.

Is it guaranteed that there will be seats for us on that flight? Do I just wait to be assigned seats at check in? If Im downgraded to main cabin what are my steps for getting the difference in fare refunded?

(The only other flight option that day is connecting through MSP but that extends my travel day by over 10 hours which is a nope)

If you are confirmed you will get seats. Delta routinely goes months or even years without involuntarily denying boarding to anyone. Keep checking as things change and something might open up prior to check in.

Flight in May. MCI-BOS was changed from a 2:25PM departure to a 2:55PM departure. I booked this flight on Friday, and the schedule change didn't come until today (Monday)!

Pretty typical that they don't send out notices of Saturday schedule changes until the following Monday.

I had a 10-minute change to an arrival on an itinerary (connection was pushed back), but the online rebooking tool does not reflect any ability to enact a free change (main cabin fare). This is odd as compared to some other recent schedule changes where even a minute provided a free change. Has anyone ever had luck with agents providing the free change in this case? I tried messaging, but the agent quoted the fare difference and said I was ineligible for a free change due to the minor change.

Sometimes the online tool is indeed quite generous, but it would be very unusual for an agent to waive the fare difference for such a minor change.

I had booked MCI-SLC-SEA-OGG in domestic F about 320 days out for next Christmas and they changed the schedule a few days later, but when I made the online change at that time it said I had a ticket for MCI-SEA-OGG instead of just MCI-OGG, which appeared to limit my rebooking options by forcing me to connect through SEA, I went ahead and changed it to MCI-ATL-SEA-OGG, all domestic F on narrowbodies. This past weekend the next round of schedule changes came out and when I clicked the change button it said it was an MCI-OGG itinerary which then opened up all the options I really wanted, now rebooked MCI-ATL-OGG in Delta One on the ATL-OGG leg.

Refund after change request?

If I request a change to my itinerary after a schedule change, would I be permitted at a later time to request a refund if I no longer want to take the trip?

Or does me making the change request waive my right to a refund?

Thanks!

For schedule changes, its basically either or. When you get notified of the schedule change, you can either take the refund then or find a new itinerary. Once youve found a new flight and changed to that, you can only cancel and get an E-credit.

TL;DR Once you have changed to a new flight, you cant get a refund.

Delta definitely seems to be firming up their summer schedule, as I haven't received any major schedule change emails in about a month. I have been getting schedule change emails, but that's just for 10-minute (minor) changes.

Month ago was the last major schedule change weekend and they seem to have major schedule change weekends once per month, usually midmonth from what I have observed. I had major changes to Memorial day travel, but the rest of my summer reservations were untouched in that update. Last weekend was Easter and schedule changes usually do not occur over holiday weekends. I would expect big changes to July/August schedules either this weekend or next weekend.

Looking over past few months, not seeing many significant recent changes from DL
Other than AA, most of the other carriers don't seem to be aggressively overloading flights any more (only to cut them back later).
AA did a couple of big updates/cutbacks back during the last couple weekends in February for mostly June - October flights with many routes losing a frequency or two. As an example, MSP-PHL had been loaded to bump up from 1x daily to 3x daily starting in June, but got chopped back to 1x daily through September. You can still see the 3x daily schedule on flights for October 5th and beyond (which will likely also get chopped at some point).

That said UA just loaded a bunch of EWR summer schedule cuts last weekend in response to FAA request to reduce NYC schedules for summer -- https://www.aeroroutes.com/eng/230412-uaewr
Wouldn't be surprised is DL does something similar this coming weekend.

Got up early this morning to check and recheck all of my upcoming DL flights. Lots of changes for June/July travel. I didnt see any May or August changes. Check your flights.

Still rolling it- my fussy limited route availability July trip still has the seat map unavailable for 3 out of 4 legs.
