In the wild, how does one discern IT consultants from the larger population of poor dressers? Does idle shop talk betray their occupation, or is there some other telltale sign? Company-issued embroidered backpacks, perhaps?

Backpacks. Logoed polo shirts. Golf sweaters. Often seen with Bluetooth headsets. Android phones. But, yes, they are also very likely to talk shop loudly.

I do acknowledge that not all IT consultants are the second coming of Willy Loman, but they do seem to be a very common subspecies.

I was recently on a flight where 6 gun carrying types boarded en mass and asked who was 3D while they were looking right at him. Not sure if it is procedure, intimidation by making them identify themselves or what.

3D did not make the trip with us but someone did get the tarmac upgrade in his place

Was it a flight to a place without an extradition treaty?

But, I don't doubt your story. I could see everyone making the made dash to grab their bags and deplane as soon as the aircraft stopped. In fact, I've been noticing that more and more, people are unfastening their seat belts before the "ding".
That was sort of the way it played out when another F passenger ended up getting belligerent with me because I asked him to please stow his bare feet during the meal service. He had walked onto the plane looking fairly buzzed, had multiple PDBs and more once aloft. Yelling at me and threatening me ("I paid for this dang ticket and I'll keep my feet how I please. If you don't turn around and look back at your computer screen I'll come over there and kick your ...."). Purser passed me a napkin asking me to please let it go as police were meeting us at the gate in ATL, and the purser pointed at him to the cop in the jetway.^

But of course as I wouldn't be so uncouth.

If everyone is standing in the aisle as per usual, the location of the seat isn't useful information. The police were likely to have asked publicly, they don't really care who answered.

DYKWMSI (Do you know who my spouse is?):

I had a four hour delay in Cleveland yesterday trying to get back to Atlanta. I overheard a woman at the desk forcefully instructing the gate agent that he would have to accommodate her on whatever new routing she wanted because her "husband is the highest level; he flew a gazillion miles" with Delta this year. I'm not sure what a "gazillion" actually is, but it sure sounds like a lot. Maybe her husband took the round trip from ATL to DSoM (dark side of the moon) weekly this year.
Cotumely likes this.

Flying DCA to SLC

Missed out on upgrade by 1, so stuck in coach. Got yelled at by a woman, when I moved her bags in the overheaded to make room for my laptop bag..."Don't touch my Bags,THEY ARE VERY EXPENSIVE" she yelled. Really? I still moved them, and thought about calling FA to see if she really Needed to get pne of those 3 bags she brought on checked. I guess she has not seen how they really treat checked luggage.

Disgusting.....and would anyone want to place bets that gazillion = 50,000 here? If husband is really DM, she would know and use that term rather than claiming "highest level."

Wouldn't be surprised. The other day our flight was delayed and the only alternative I could cook up had seats open in F but not Y but the GA happily rebooked me into F anyways for the delay. Guy behind me is fuming and demands first class too on some other flight, saying he "flew 10 thousand miles on delta this year". GA politely responds, well the other gentleman has flown over 125,000 miles with us this year. Man walks away, clearly pissed.
