Flying DL1107 ATL-DFW last night. I was #1 for zero seats. Before boarding I asked the ground agent if there was a potential that anyone would misconnect with all the weather on the east coast. She said "First class is full". I asked if she would grab me if for some reason someone was a no show or if I should wait. She repeated "First class is full, you need to board." Got on board and watched as 2D remained empty up until she came on with the final paperwork. Told a pilot who may have been jump seating to take 2D. Closed the door.

The lead flight attendant walked through the cabin as we were pushing back and I asked her why they put an employee in 2D when there was an upgrade list, specifically me being number 1 on the list. I showed her in the app, she said nothing and went back to the galley. A few minutes later she told me the pilot in 2D will switch me seats. We quickly swapped while they were starting the engines but the pilot seemed annoyed. I told him I apologize but technically it should not have been his seat; the ground agent didn't do things correctly. I felt a little DYKWIA, but after a glass of wine in the air I felt much better about my decision. Should I report the ground agent? I keep seeing people going back and forth about YBYL, and maybe I should have waited at the gate. I only had a small bag for under the seat. It seems like the ATL ground agents are notorious for this kind of thing.

You should report that GA. Also you shouldn't apologize. Technically what the FA did was out of policy but I would have dropped her a JWD.

In any case, I generally ask specifically, "are there any no-shows" or "has F boarded full" with emphasis on boarded. The GA here just said "F is full" because it's checked-in full, which isn't really relevant to what you're asking.

You should report the gate agent. I wouldn't say anything about the FA giving you the upgrade as technically FAs aren't permitted to determine upgrades for revenue passengers.

I had one Awhile ago on a transcontinental flight. Pdx to Jfk. It was a last second emergency trip and there was no first available for purchase. My coach ticket was really expensive so I was first on the upgrade list. I also had my assistant checking to see if first opened up for purchase. Was at all times number one on the list as far as I could tell. Get to the airport and it is a madhouse totally full plane large wait list. I waited to board. I had a horrible seat so was in no hurry and had no bag. Announcement came to please board as they were going to clear standbys so I went over to the gate agent to ask about first. There were two agents. Asked one about first and she took my boarding pass and started to say something other gate agent interrupted and said there isn’t anything and if there are seats there are other passengers ahead of you. I said how can that be I am number one. He said there are people on the plane ahead of you. I said really. Gate agent two looked at gate agent one and said you are boarding it is your call. Gate agent one upgraded me

i boarded and sat next to some guy who looked surprised to see me. Gate agent two came on and looked at my seat mate and shrugged his shoulders. I started to ask my seatmate what happened but he was none too friendly. All I can figure is he had a companion or something of the such that the seat had been promised to it was all very strange

Rather, I'd report the GA for being dismissive of your first question, refusing to answer your second question, and potentially lying to you (depending on whether they implied that FC had boarded full).

YBYL gives GAs lots of flexibility to do things in different ways to dispatch the flight on time, but it doesn't excuse them from meeting basic customer service standards.

I'm glad to see that the FA rectified the situation. Reading through a lot of these posts, it seems like the FAs are just as guilty as the GAs with regard to prioritizing nonrevs.

I wonder if your seatmate was a nonrev. I agree it was attempted shena.

Officially, FAs are allowed to upgrade nonrevs to available seats, but not revenue passengers.

I did an SDC into the last available F seat. In fact the first attempt failed with the agent claiming there weren't any seats on the flight I wanted, but as time went on and the web site was still willing to sell a P fare, I tried Twitter, who pushed it though.

I could not select a seat (map entirely grayed out) and they told me it was blocked for assignment at the gate.

Shortly before landing on my inbound, I refreshed my itinerary and had been assigned 2B* (wonder if they were holding it for a potential FAM).

Of potential relevance to this thread, I appear on the standby list as having cleared directly into F. So if you are KAE/D, #sorrynotsorry but in any case I'm not a non rev

I did an SDC yesterday (flight this morning). It took about 30 seconds; the agent didn't assign me a seat. When I checked online, I didn't have a seat (so I picked one). I guess if I hadn't, I'd have shown as HK and cleared directly into F.

August 26, 2018 - DL1135 HSV > ATL - I’m #1 for F0.

3C is occupied by a FA.

Is that “Shena”?

Maybe, maybe not. Could be Must Fly and booked in F, could be paid F on FA’s nickel, could be paid Y on FA’s nickel and upgraded at window, etc. How long were you #1 for F0? 10 minutes, 1 hour, 20 hours? When did F get seated there, on board upgrade, last one to board, boarded with Premium? Without looking at Delta’s records, those are clues.
