Has anyone tested QuickPass (or even PBOC chip) at a Square merchant recently? This page only mentions JCB not working with the chip + contactless reader, which makes me think either of those are at least a remote possibility.

I haven't tested QuickPass at a Square merchant yet, because I was focusing on major chains first, but Square is on my list to test compatibility due to the claimed UnionPay support. I will plan to test it soon.

I'd try Square Register and the white puck in case one works better than the other for whatever reason. (That might be the case for JCB, anyway.)

Results of contactless UnionPay testing:
McDonalds - YES, works with UnionPay contactless card! Receipt shows same AID as when you use UnionPay chip card insert
Walgreens - NO UnionPay contactless support (terminal said "Card not supported"), despite it working with chip card insert at same store

I don't know a merchant with a Square Register (integrated Android-powered grey hardware), but I should be able to test with the Square Stand (iPad) with a contactless/chip reader. The contactless/chip reader can be used as a "puck" as you say Bluetoothed to a phone/iPad OR installed in a weighted angled holder that is plugged into a Square Stand.

Another data point for US testing of UnionPay contactless:

CVS - NO: terminal had a chip rejection error when contactless was tried; Yes, it works natively with UnionPay chip card insertion here.

So far for my testing in the US, the only successful UnionPay contactless tested and confirmed is McDonalds. I have not yet tested a Square merchant.

I tried a Square merchant. The NFC and dipping had a message saying this card needed to be swiped. I only tried dipping at Clover and it worked. My local 99 Ranch terminal didn't take the NFC, but took the dip directly. So far, only McDonald's and Burger King were able to take the NFC on this card. Most places don't have the application loaded to run the card via NFC, even when dipping works.

Most of the trouble using this card is online purchases as many online merchants don't detect the card number. I think similarly, using this card online in China would be an issue as online websites usually does some verification method with the bank directly (I haven't tried it yet).

I originally got this card for a trip, but it didn't come in time.

Thanks for the data points! Your discovery of Burger King as working with contactless as the second known merchant is great! There are others out there, but they need to be discovered and reported. I'm surprised Square only did swipe as they imply on their website that chip & contactless as supported on all cards they list except JCB.

See my master list of working US merchant locations (focusing mostly on Contactless, Chip, & Swipe + PIN debit mode, plus Online), which I will post next.

To start out, thanks to all the early adopters of the ICBC UnionPay card who reported their experiences with the card, particularly their international testing. For the US, I was interested in getting a broader picture of acceptance in the US with real transactions beyond the limited datapoints available.

Some are based only on reports, while the remaining ones I personally tested June to Sept 2019 with real completed & posted transactions. UnionPay support changes periodically with merchants due to evolving terminal configurations & website/app support so retesting is necessary, mostly to see if it has improved.

One of the interesting facets is merchants who don't support UnionPay chip yet but support cashback like a PIN debit card. At these merchants, this card works like a PIN debit card running on the Pulse/Discover debit network.

IN-PERSON WORKS

Chip & Contactless
McDonald's
Burger King - based on reports

Chip
POS: Clover - based on reports; contactless not tested

CVS drug
99 Ranch (grocery) - based on reports
Home Depot (no contactless for any card type)
QFC (grocery) - based on reports
Walgreens drug
Walmart (no contactless for any card type) - based on reports with cashier; I had trouble getting it to work at self-checkout, but finally successful
USPS (post office; human clerk and kiosk; no contactless for any card type)

Swipe + PIN (Pulse/Discover debit network mode) - acts like debit card

Arco (stations that don't take credit cards) - pay at pump (any amount up to preauthorized $100) or pay at cashier (you give set amount)

Dollar Tree - cash back ($1 fee by store)
Grocery Outlet - cash back
Office Depot
Rite-Aid - cash back
Safeway - cash back
Staples - cash back

Swipe Only (most merchants will accept as swipe; a few examples shown)

POS: Square - based on reports

Starbucks
Target

Not Accepted At All
Costco - loop cycle of chip error & swipe
Fry's Electronics - chip error & swipe did nothing
RedBox - swipe says card not recognized (new card unit, but before chip & contactless enabled)

ONLINE WORKS (web browser) - real payment fully completed & posted

Most websites & apps that autodetect card as UnionPay or Discover when entering will work
Card seems accepted at a rough estimate of 40%-50% of US websites of all types

Amazon.com - card type autodetected as UnionPay
Bedbathandbeyond.com - card type autodetected as Discover
Boxed.com - card type autodetected as UnionPay
DollarTree.com - select card type as Discover
Geico.com - card type autodetected as Discover
Netflix.com (autopay works) - card type autodetected as Discover
PG&E (manual pay) - card type autodetected
RiteAid.com (Authorize.net) - card type autodetected as Discover
Sports Basement (Shopify) - card type autodetected as Discover
Verizon Prepaid (autopay) - card type autodetected as Discover
Walgreens.com - card type autodetected as Discover

FWIW, mine works fine (dip) at a lot of local businesses, including my vet which recognizes it as UP. I'll have to look to see who they use for their POS.

ETA: to not dip not swipe

2. I keep hearing 'QuickPass' and wondering if this is something extra I need to activate on my ICBC Gold Preferred card?

3. I signed up (back in December) on the premise of getting $50 cash bonus after $1,000 purchase (in which I made 2 (two) $500 purchases in two separate billing cycles, all within 3 months of signup).. Haven't seen that $50 bonus yet, wonder if others had the same experience?

Thx in advance!
Is your ICBC UP card one issued in the USA?

How did your Shenzhen experience go? Do they charge Forex fee for China transactions?

I know there were other replies to this but I wanted to give datapoints for my own experience.

PIN - I set my own PIN online during the card activation process in June 2019 after received the card in the mail

Bonus - I checked all the dates, and I received the $50 bonus exactly 6 weeks after I finished the spend.

Yes, issued in the USA (Oakland, CA branch - walked in person to apply for it - approved on the spot). My trip was supposed to be this month and through Hongkong, but in light of the riots, etc, my company decided to postpone the entire trip. So haven't tested. Others may have more feedback for ya.

Thanks mrcardnet, yes, I finally found the place on the website to set the PIN. And after emailing customer service, the $50 bonus magically appeared. I guess they did forget.

Thx!

More datapoints for US merchants that I tested with the US-issued ICBC UnionPay card:

Trader Joe's - UnionPay Chip supported natively like other chip cards (receipt says ICBC PBOCCARD); will test contactless there in future

Safeway (grocery store) - Still swipe-only UnionPay in PIN debit mode as tested & reported before, but wanted to add datapoint of $200 cashback at the self-checkout working recently, as I wasn't sure if others had mentioned trying with a high cashback amount on this card; Until Safeway supports UnionPay chip cards, this is a great ATM alternative

Smart & Final (grocery store) - Swipe-only UnionPay but works in PIN debit mode, so up to $50 cashback ($100 and $200 requests failed)

O'Reilly's Auto Parts - Swipe-only UnionPay as a credit card; has UnionPay sticker on terminal, but no chip support

I'm wondering how much of this is a byproduct of Discover's cash back at grocery store feature? Such transactions with the UnionPay post as a purchase and do earn rewards.
