FlyerTalk Forums Expert How-Tos and Guides
Last edit by: Ocn Vw 1K
In order to reduce noise in the Coronavirus / Covid-19 : general fact-based reporting thread, and to create a central place to invite any member to ask a basic question about the impact of COVID-19 on travel, your moderators have decided to open this separate "lounge" thread for related discussion that isn't strictly fact-based reporting.
Any member who can provide a constructive, helpful answer to a question; or post constructively in reply to a member's point-of-view, is welcome to post.

All FT rules apply, including avoiding personalized, snarky, political, other off-topic, commercial, and repeatedly disruptive content.

Discussion of general economic impacts of Covid-19 belongs in the OMNI forum, not here.
Discussion and critique of political/government actions to aid the economy or which is far more political than related to COVID-19 is for the OMNI/PR forum, not here.

This is a protocol for posting adopted by the forum Moderator team:Please follow this protocol, based on FlyerTalk Rules and long-standing FlyerTalk best practices. Doing so will help keep the thread open, and allow our moderator team to aid members, rather than having to resort to discipline.

•Constructive, respectful posts, views, opinions, questions, and replies, related to the topic are welcome. Avoid commenting on members personally, or posting off-topic or political messages.

•While respectful disagreement of a posted view is allowed, don’t call-out posters to prove their points. FlyerTalk has never required discussion standards at the level of a Ph.D. dissertation defense, or a trial court witness cross-examination.

•After a reasonable exchange of views on a point, please yield the floor so that others may bring up different topics, questions or points.

•Especially important in this time of pandemic, when normal life and travel have been upended: please take regular breaks from the thread.
Please stay healthy,

your FT Coronavirus and Travel Moderator Team.

All of that is pretty sad and quite appalling!

Seat belts are a bad idea. People are still going to die in car crashes.

Masks don't 100% guarantee you won't get infected or infect someone else...so don'twear them.

Don’t blame Cruise Ships until you’ve looked at Austrian Ski Resorts.

Agree.

There are more fashionable options that motorcycle riders use.
N95's they are not, but any reduction of droplets being inhaled is better than no reduction.

Baby wipes are available. they are not virucidal but the "solution to pollution is dilution", so they help a little.
Virus cannot enter through your hands so wash your hands and phone before touching your face.

Don't wear masks, no evidence it's helpful. But, DO cover your mouth when you cough. How does this even work on people?

Waste of time to even think about this, much less have someone other than a FTer debate it. The Princess cases are a drop in the bucket of the overall cases. What happened to one nation under Canada?

CDC in a previous time:

https://www.cdc.gov/media/pressrel/2007/r070503.htm

In the same period, the FDA approved masks from 3M and others for use by the general public in a pandemic flu or other public health emergency.

Thus, it could be a forceful, effective message to others to stay away when otherwise they might not respect your boundaries.'
The U.S. could benefit from this approach, especially now. In the U.S., where wearing masks isn't common or widely accepted, the signal could be even more powerful. Americans are unused to the idea of social distancing and many aren’t yet taking it seriously. We need serious education and modeling of social distancing, because people don't get it or don't accept it deep down experientially, or it takes practice to learn and adopt it. The example about the lady getting offended above reminds me of early stages of adopting seat belt use, where the driver gets offended when you put the seat belt on, because they think it is a judgement of their driving skills...

Coughing and Sneezing explained here:

It is a much more disruptive and moist process than breathing or talking.

PPE use in the US is just not accepted as it is in some other countries. Not sure how to change [almost] a whole country's mind in a few weeks. But I agree, MUCH too little is done.
The main problem is likely that there's just not enough to go around, so the "N95 masks are not recommended" mantra is SOP.
Govt officials can't wear them to lead-by-example because everyone would complain with: "Where is MY mask?".

(Just dropped off a couple of P100 masks at the local post office for its staff, because they had nothing other than gloves. )

Since the malaria drug seems to help combat the corona virus, I wonder if taking malaria prevention pills prevents one from contracting the corona virus?

UK now under lockdown. Vast majority of shops closed. Population confined to residence, apart from shopping for essential supplies, travel to work where home working is impossible and one form of exercise per day (walk, run, bike ride).

The problem is that if you buy a seatbelt, nobody else is lacking access to seatbelts. If you, someone self-isolating with an absolutely minimal benefit from wearing a mask stockpile them, doctors and nurses and front-line staff who DO need them have less access to them.
