I'm going to look into something vaguely ALCO-esque for 2009...however my goal will likely be Silver in as few actual segments as possible. There's no point in trying this late in the year...I've noticed that Wed-Thu overnight turns are the cheapest right now. Hopefully that pattern holds and my finances improve to the point that I can dabble in some quasi-pointless flying soon.

Compeling idea. I currently have 16,985 EQM's and 22 EQP's. I've been planning on doing some Texas segments to get 8 points and hit silver. That will land me silver until 2010. However, if I wait and quality silver early in the year, I'll keep it until 2011. Price of silver now is about $600 or less if I give in and do more cheaper flights. What is a reasonable cost for getting silver from scratch?

gbryan84 Nov 2, 2008 3:33 pm

Out of the NYC/PHL area I bet I could get silver from scratch for a little more than $1k.

In the completely random department for today, I figured out that these cheap L-fare transcons via IAH could have netted me Silver in 4 R/T's at just a shade over $1K.

I figured out that 4x PHL-IAH-SMF would be 23,472 EQM. I also make the trip to FLL at least once a year, which would be 2,146 EQM per trip. That barely qualifies. If I got on the MR Deal and paid under 200x4 for SMF. But I also work under the assumption that were I to do this, I would not take time off to fly since I get weekdays off. I also would try to make the tightest turns possible, since I don't want hotel expenses. And since I work a four-day week and get three off, I would also schedule that late IAH-PHL as much as possible to build in flexibility should they be VDBing.

My record on the ERJ in flight: Just under three hours. I was in 12A, and it was a MSP-IAH flight with a headwind that made the flight run about half an hour longer than normal. The guy in 12B and I struck up a conversation, and drank half the bar cart ourselves. Not a bad flight at all. Driving home at midnight was no fun though.

My record sitting on an ERJ, from boarding until arrival at the destination: Just under 4 hours on a SYR-EWR flight. We boarded, then ATC held us at the gate for about 30 minutes. Then we taxied to the runway again, and ATC held us at the end of the runway for nearly 2.5 hours. Then we flew to EWR. The miracle was that I still made my connection to my EWR-IAH flight, despite walking off the ERJ less than 15 minutes before the IAH flight was scheduled to depart. Even better, they hadn't given away my upgrade to a BusinessFirst seat on the 762, so I not only made the flight but kept my upgrade. That experience was two years ago this past Friday.

My record is 4 1/2 hours EWR-OMA - ATC hold at EWR. Fortunately, I had two seats to myself; but I HATE those seats.

PHL-IAH-SNA/SEA/SJC/SAN/SMF/ONT R/T: 5340, 6396*, 5876, 5254, 5868, 5316

* - could be the longest 1-stop domestic itin in the CO system. Not sure, but if it isn't it's gotta be close.

ETA: If you stage from BDL and get BDL-IAH on the seasonal service (if that's still around, per Wiki - ?) at an MR price, this would be a few hundred longer.

Gotta work on MR this week for BL JR this week. I need to figure out exactly what she'll be short and then plan. I have spent the day doing nothing and it has been SO nice :)

In the lower 48 BOS-SEA via IAH would be longest. BOS-IAH-ANC (summer seasonal non-stop) would be longer on the continent and BOS-IAH-HNL is the longest in the 50 states. EWR-HNL-GUM stays wholly in the USA and territories, and is even longer than the EWR-NRT-GUM routing.

And don't forget IAH-PDX as an option.

Of course, at MR prices starting in PHL is generally much better than BOS.

Anyone up for a EWR-HNL-GUM MR???

Ive done both the PHL-IAH-SMF for as low as $168 back in Feb (scored a $450 voucher on that too in SMF)and PHL-IAH-SEA this weekend for $218.

Any idea how IAH-PDX runs for upgrades? Days of the week are up for grabs though she has prek MWF so I'd like her to not miss more than she has to; but I can teach her the letter H on the trip.

Tuesday and Saturday are usually good for upgrades on that route.
