That is not at all trivial. I'm surprised that the basement contractor would do that in this economy, but I guess I shouldn't be.

Me too. I couldn't believe it when the GC told me that they said because it was "a slow time" they were closing down operations until the New Year. Excuse me? I have a whopping great basement hole just waiting for the concrete walls that you have made for me and that are sitting in your warehouse, and just last week you told me it wouldn't be a problem setting them this week. Where is the customer service?

Unfortunately we have already paid them a $10,000 deposit (our of $30,000), and I really don't want to lose that or I'd tell them the shove teh basement walls up their little holes and I'll build a regular block basement.

Can you get the GC to find another basement wall vendor?

Sounds to me like a discount is in order based on the losses you will incur from the ~3 week delay.

Too late. The Superior Walls product is the one Mr.Brit wants, and we have already paid $10k deposit. Also, it takes a while to build them, and so we'd be as bad burned as scalded if we went with another manufacturer - and I don't even know if there are any in NJ. Also, we'd have to re-do all the architectural drawings and resubmit them for altered permits - aaaaaaagh! Nope! We're screwed. We just have to wait.

Yup. I have told my GC that I am deducting $500 per week of delay.

SPG is giving luggage tags to Plats - I hope this isn't the only year end gift they're giving... Haven't they given vouchers for free nights the past?

ETA: Looks like they are giving tags to Golds as well. If anyone doesn't have an SPG account and wants Gold + luggage tags, PM me. :o

Becareful how much you push contractors as it can lead to them giving you an inferior installation. The shut down is an economic decision. Everyone will be off during that time so they don't have to pay them and not have to worry about carrieing the overhead. I know it sucks but it isn't uncommon for this to happen at the holidays. I know the frustrations to some extent as my care when in for body work years ago and it took 4 days longer than normal (4 extra days in a Chevy Cavalier too) because they didn't get the paint on until Christmas eve and they were closed for the next several days. When they returned they found out Honda sent them the wrong headlight and had to order another one. which added a day of delay.

Make sure that the wall company is responsible for any added rental costs for pumps to keep the big dig from being the 'small lake'

That will be an excluded from their contract as they can turn around and demand storage fees for the delay.

That is one of my biggest fears - that the hole will become a gigantic swimming pool. then (a) it will require pumping out and (b) it is a HUGE liability in terms of safety. Although GC has erected a safety fence, you know what kids are like!

I know! I completely understand why they are closing down their operations. It just sucks! When I am rational tomorrow, I will be much more understanding. At the moment, I am just major league pi$$ed - at my town for taking so long to issue the permits, at the SW company salesman for claiming that "it's no problem, just let us know when you are ready" and because it is costing me time and money that are in short supply!
