That and making snarky comments behind the customer's back, despite them being able to hear me.

I'm guessing you had a bad experience at a W? ;)

I do believe Crosby Stills and Nash Summed it up nicely-

"Take a look around you, tell me what you see
A girl who thinks she's ordinary lookin' she has got the key.
If you can get close enough to look into her eyes
There's something special right between the bitterness she hides.

And you're fair game,
You'll never know what she'll decide, you're fair game,
Just relax, enjoy the ride.

The ones you never notice are the ones you have to watch.
She's pleasant and she's friendly while she's looking at your crotch.
Try your hand at conversation, gossip is a lie,
And sure enough she'll take you home and make you wanna die.

And you're fair game,
You'll never know what she'll decide, you're fair game,
Just relax, enjoy the ride."

or as Mick And Keith said, "Find a Girl with far away eyes"

VDB opportunity. :D

But the fare is good through March and I'm considering grabbing one at that price.

ETA: Also, good luck Mike!

It's more comical than anything. I mean, I don't really rely on staff at hotels for much, anyways. Not all Ws are like that, either (W Foshay, Minneapolis has excellent staff working the desk). The great upgrades and good variety of brands keeps me coming back to SPG.

Nope. Having worked in high-end hotels through college where service and "customer is king" were drilled into me repeatedly it's astounding that I can pay $400/night for a room and be treated like an inconvenience.

Sure, the style is nice and there's a perceived brand value that maybe, after enough drinks, I'd like to self-ID with, but hospitality is a service industry first and foremost. I don't care how nice / trendy / luxurious the room is if you make the guest feel like a piece of dirt you're not going to be as successful as you can be.

I think even longer than that. The version of the fare that let you route onto PS F was around for months. :D

I suppose that is true, and I've certainly had my fair share of incompetent or otherwise extremely unhelpful front desk staff at a myriad of Marriott properties. I think it's a comment more of the state of the service industry rather than a corporate attitude, at least in most locations.

The notable exception to that is Hyatt. Because the vast majority of their properties are corporate owned (not franchised) they have very strict corporate standards, and a strong service culture that are actually adhered to.

That, and they hire people based on personality and have some stellar bennies. :-:
