Wow...definitely more hours than I plan on working, though I took the work for the same reason...that much OT pay is hard to pass up, especially since I'm going to be spending a lot of September unpaid on vacation. One drawback of working for myself is that I pretty much have to take work when it comes along, 'cause it might not come back again. But it is a good problem to have when it actually happens.

Thanks. I was thinking about that as I was shooting - it crossed my mind that you would probably be able to spot where I was.

I used to regard 911 as a sacred cow. The veritable "red button" that you never hit unless the proverbial droppings hit the fan.

And then I began working as a first responder. Having spent several hours in our dispatch center I know that for every 1 nonsense call that gets to me, dispatch filters out dozens. It's amazing to me that someone would honestly consider calling 911 because a deer was walking through their yard.

Or their neighbor was mulching at 7:01pm (1 min. after you have to end yard work).

Bah. People have no sense.

I just gave myself a headache typing this. I better go call an ambulance.

My crazy grandmother used to call 911 in the small backwoods East Texas town I grew up in all the time. She'd call because her cable TV was out, because her house was too hot/cold, because the electricity went out, because she couldn't remember someone's phone number… It was sad, but kind of funny at the same time. And the town was so small that the 911 dispatcher knew how to tell if she was just ticked off because her cable was out and wanted to vent, or if she was having a bad moment of dementia and needed help. In the latter cases, the 911 dispatcher would say "Mrs. Sullivan, I'll send someone over to help you." And then 911 would call my house (or my father's work if during the business day) and have one of us go over to check on her.

Apparently she wasn't the only older person in town who did this. Rumor was they all talked about calling 911 for random things over lunch and dominoes at the senior citizen's center in town. My father confirmed this once, based on a conversation her heard going on there when he went to pick her up after lunch one day.

Well although I wasnt able to make the Houston Do this weekend, I did get my passport within two weeks of applying so now I just sit and wait for the next international mistake fare. :)

Marathons = worst (summer) Olympic event ever.

I would also like to take this time to say that I am sick about hearing about Michael Phelps. Yes, he is an incredible swimmer but I am not convinced that he is the American hero that the media makes him out to me.

Ok, I'm done venting about the Olympics. :D

The Phelps watch will be over soon since the swimming events are almost done.

Had I finished my history degree program at the school that I started at, I was going to do my final thesis on the (mis)use of the word "hero". I share your non-convinced feeling because I'm not sold that athleticism does a hero make. It just means that you're good at something.

No. He is a very gifted and talented ATHLETE. He is not a hero. At all.

He's useful to the media because having something to talk about that is actually related to the Olympics has to be better than the inane random crap that the announcers are talking about on their "life in China" bits, but only by a little bit.

He said the right things in the interview tonight, thanking his teammates and otherwise being somewhat modest. And I'll not blame him for the NBC marketing of his exploits on a dedicated DVD that they are putting out. He swam great this week and deserves some of the attention he's received. I hope he doesn't let it take over his life too much more than it already has.
