Exactly, and I've been around computers for 25 some odd years, so I guess that explains my outdated impressions! :D

Oh, I am with you and struggled as well when Acer was oft referenced for netbooks and other hardware. Many perceived discount products have really been able to put together some quality.

I can see why it bothers some of them. I'm currently just a 2P on UA, and have been since 2007, but have averaged 50-60% upgrade success using E-500s. That will go away if all elites are put into the elite queue, as opposed to the current system where only those who opt in, through the use of an upgrade instrument.

On the other hand, I'll be 1K before the end of this year, so to me it's not such a big deal. With the great success I've had out of ATL on UA for upgrades as a 2P, as a 1K, it should be just about 100%. But for those at the lower levels, it will be like CO Silver, where upgrades are rare. The difference, of course, is that on UA, those lower elite levels already have a better seat. On CO, the Silvers can't get a better seat unless they're lucky enough to snag an exit row seat during check-in, and on some flights, there are only 2-3 seats in economy that are better, especially on the RJ/733/735/73G flights.

This is why I'm of two minds about this change -- as a 1P, I'll be up front a lot of the time flying to ORD and never up front the rest of the time. (I can only ever get into F with miles from SFO or LAX, and that probably won't change). On the other hand, the reason I fly UA is that I can get into E+, just like the reason I fly CO for business is that a refundable ticket usually amounts to F.

it would be nice if UA (and even CO when the time comes) offered SWUs (even if it's just one) for every 10k flown per quarter (a la CR-1s for 1Ks). I flew those miles every quarter just to collect the CR-1s so keeps people flying.

Don't they give SWUs for every 25k EQMs above 100k?

Sometimes, I think it's best to just stay away and let the  work itself out. We should all have far more important things to do. But, what do I know...

As far as technology is concerned - aren't all major brands (except AAPL) essentially a discount product now? :p

Dell Adamo is a pricey piece of junk, no? :)

The new one is a beauty I must admit.

I still consider the brand (Dell) to not exactly be "upscale", yet their low-end equipment is still overpriced ...

Just had to transfer funds from one TIAA-CREF account to another to avoid a $15 fee ...

Hmmm, if I can route back from Oz via Asia, looks like I can string together a:

IAH-YYC-YVR-SYD; PER-BKK-NRT-ORD-IAH itinerary. :-:

Every 50k over 100k.

The 25k this year is a promo when you hit 125k.

It's not a piece of junk. Pretty? Sure. But underpowered as I recall.

Why not try for the BKK-LAX flight before they pull it and it goes away?
