There was one that had a "covenant employment agreement" you had to sign at the time of hire, and adhere to as a condition of employment. I saw it once, and realized that of the 20 or so items on the list you swore not to do while their employee, I had done at least 15-17 of them at some point in recent history. The worst part was you weren't just promising not to do these things on their property; you were promising not to do them at home or anywhere else, either. I did get busted by that client once. I went out to dinner at a pizza place near their campus, and ordered a pint to go with my pizza. A few minutes later a guy from the accounting office I worked with walked in with his wife and kids, saw me, stopped by my table to chat, and the entire time his wife was fixated on the beer. Fortunately he was pretty laid back and didn't worry about it. But she had this death stare on that glass. Had the roles been reversed, and she had been the person I was working with, I'm sure my management would have heard about it.

Yep. It's a private, non-denominational, fundamentalist institution. They have rules against a lot of things. I'm surprised they let me set foot on their property. But they are really, really nice people and I do like working here, even if their rules require me to be extra careful with what goes on an expense report (or how it gets reported), and I have to avoid too much conversation about my personal life.
For some reason I've managed to get a reputation at work of being a good consultant to send to such institutions. This is the 5th or 6th one I've had in four years. I've had my share of drinks in the Bible Belt (plenty in Monroe, Louisiana). It only reinforced my belief that Southern Baptists are people who don't recognize each other in a liquor-store. :-:

Yes, but then there are the ones that sit outside in the parking lot with signs and pamphlets telling those going inside how they're destined for a hot and fiery eternity.

I'm sinning right now to the cost of $7.00 in the Marriott lounge, charged to my room. I believe I can call this "room service dinner."
And on TV in the lounge? Watching live footage of a DC-10 tanker dropping fire suppressant on the latest wild fires in the LA area. |
