I had the same interpretation of "fight fires" as ConciergeMike. Of course, a big part of my job is to state things in a manner where most people are afraid to ask further questions.

I read a book dealing with US Special Forces in the 1980's, and the author told a story of skirmishing with some rebel forces, only to find that someone on his side had killed a friend of his (that he had served with) who was commanding the rebels. Author was convinced that CIA "firefighting" was behind that guy being there at that time. I can't remember if the book was that of Eric Haney. Said book was largely discredited by the special ops community...they could be denying Haney's assertions, or they could be plausibly denying. Who knows.

AF/KL and AA also seem to want in on JAL.

One time the Arizona Republic sent a reporter to Marana to do a story. He was shown an airframe, I recall he reported it was a C7 Caribou, being fitted for fire work by Evergreen under contract with the Forest Service. He reported that he, who had served in Vietnam, saw some side mounts and said that they looked like 50-cal machine gun mounts. No, he was told, they were for special hoses to spray slurry.

Ya just never know.

Naturally, AA has the best shot simply due to alliance ties.

.50cal mounts can be fabricated/welded on by competent people...but I've never seen a firefighting aircraft that orbits and sprays as opposed to just dropping out of the belly. Said reporter was hoodwinked, IMO.

+1.

Beautiful weather and good air quality too. Unlikely my week in August. All rain.

Looks like MBM3 had tea at the Peninsula?
